iPad 2 Case Review: Mivizu Sense Apple iPad 2 Leather Case

What's Hot: Very protective leather case, built-in stand and many colors to choice from.

What's Not: Magnet cover doesn't work as it should.

If you like the Smart Cover style case but want full protection for your iPad 2, Mivizu has a case for you. The Mivizu Sense leather case for iPad 2 has a Smart Cover built into a fitted case and functions like the Smart Cover as a stand in two viewing positions. The Sense case fits the iPad 2 perfectly and it won't fit the original iPad as it?s too thick. The Mivizu case comes in 5 colors: black, gray, a very low hue pink, indigo blue and sap green.

Design

The Mivizu Sense case for iPad 2 combines a form fitting case and a Smart Cover style cover with strong inserts. The case is made of genuine leather with microfiber lining that won?t scratch your iPad 2 when you slide it in and out of the case. The case feels seriously protective with strong inserts for both the front cover and the back case where the iPad 2 lives, and for an extra layer of protection, the Mivizu Sense case adds a layer of soft padding on the back. Though not in a hard shell case like with the Speck FitFolio case, there is no doubt that your iPad 2 will survive some bumps and minor shocks in your backpack or briefcase while in the case. One nice thing about the Mivizu Sense case is that most of the bezel on the iPad 2 is covered by a layer of leather while the Speck FitFolio case exposes the front of your tablet. The Mivizu Sense is also a little lighter than the Speck FitFolio case, weighing 8.2 oz.

While the display and the back of the iPad 2 get some serious protection inside the Mivizu Sense case, the sides are covered under only a layer of leather and soft lining. The stitching looks robust on the Sense case.

Features

First, let?s look at the leather case that stores your iPad 2. It has cutouts for all ports and buttons on the back and sides of the iPad 2 including the audio jack, mic, power button, screen lock, volume rocker, camera and 30-pin connector. All cutouts have perfect positions except the audio jack cutout is slightly off the center. It?s still functional nonetheless. The leather case also has speaker grill that lets sound out. On the front, the leather covers the bezel with cutouts for the front camera and the Home button. The iPad 2 is very functional while in the case.

The sturdy front cover works similarly as Apple?s Smart Cover. The cover folds in 4 sections and can give your iPad 2 two standing positions. The tablet feels reasonably steady while popped up with the cover. Like the Smart Cover, the Mivizu Sense uses magnets for closing the front cover, but not nearly as many as the Smart Cover does. From what we can tell, there are three small coin magnets in each of the open edges and their job is to keep the cover closed. While some users, ourselves included, might be afraid of magnets used in Smart Cover, one thing we have to realize is that it needs the power of these magnets to shut the case tight because the cover also acts like on/off switch: when you close the cover the iPad 2 shuts off the screen, and when you open it, the tablet turns on the screen. The Mivizu Sense is designed to work in the same way, except that fewer magnets means the case doesn?t shut as precisely as the iPad 2 likes, and it some times confuses the tablet. The result is when you have the Sense case closed, the screen turns on once in a while and shuts off again without opening the cover.

Conclusion

If you looked at the Smart Cover and thought to yourself ?what am I going to do for the back of the iPad 2?? then give the Mivizu Sense case a look. It?s very protective with strong inserts on the front and the back as well as extra padding on the back. The case feels reasonably slim and keeps your iPad 2 very functional while in the case. The leather has good quality and stitching robust. The Smart Cover style cover on the Sense case gives your iPad 2 a nice built-in stand, but it doesn?t shut perfectly which turns on and off the tablet when you are not intending to do that.
