What you heard about Dell's problem with programs are untrue. I have a Dell Axim X5 Advanced and have thrown more apps including games than you can imagine at it. So far the Dell is no worse than iPAQ 3900.
The 4-way D-pad isn't as big of a problem as you think. Most of the games are using 8 directions. While the 3900 series units are excellent in performance and other things, I have trouble dealing with the oval D-pad when play some games.
Dell does come with Windows Media Play. All Pocket PCs come with it. The iPAQ 3900 has a better screen, brighter and more color saturated. But the Dell has better screen than the 3800. You can read our detailed reviews on all three unit here:

Good question, I've been a Handspring Visor user for a number of years and I'm looking to move to a pocket pc. I do a lot of educational presentations and would like to work with my PowerPoint presentations on the unit. Any thoughts on which one would be better? Are there accessories so that I can connect a pocket pc to a LED and leave the laptop at home?

If you go to our front page, you will find a link to the Presentation Solutions page. All of the Pocket PC presentation tools we've seen are in CF format. Which means you can use any Pocket PC with CF slot or iPAQ with CF Sleeve. Here is the link:
