Samsung Galaxy S II Epic Touch 4G on Sprint Video Review
      #41336 - 09/15/11 10:12 AM

Here's a phone I know many of us in the US have been waiting for, the Samsung Galaxy S II. Today we look at Sprint's version that will be available Sept. 16 for $199 with contract. Sprint had the folks at Samsung stretch the phone out, and the display has gone from 4.3" for the original European/Asian S II to 4.52 inches. The resolution remains the same at 800 x 480, and you know we're pining for qHD. We've got that gorgeous Super AMOLED Plus display with its super-duper color saturation to tide us over though, and you can even select from 3 levels of display color intensity.

The Epic Touch 4G retains the incredibly fast Samsung Exynos 1.2GHz dual core CPU with serious hardware graphics acceleration. Out review unit scored 3126 on Quadrant in a world where 2,000 usually looks good. Linpack's multi-thread benchmark test gave us numbers ranging from 76-89 (most fast Android phones are in the 50's).

This is a large phone, but slim. If you've got small hands, it might not be the phone for you. It weighs just 4.6 ounces-- Samsung always manages to make incredibly light smartphones. The price you pay is plenty of plastics and a very thin plastic back. The phone doesn't look particularly expensive or chic.

The Samsung Epic Touch 4G has 16 gigs of internal storage, and microSD card slot and dual band WiFi 802.11b/g/n along with Bluetooth and a GPS. It has 4G WiMAX, though we couldn't get any rocking download speeds here in the outreaches of the Dallas metroplex. There's the usual 3G EV-DO Rev. A for broader but slower coverage and the phone can work as a WiFi mobile hotspot. The Epic Touch 4G has an 1800 mAh battery, and we're still running battery life tests.

Here's our Samsung Epic Touch 4G video review. Our full written review will follow in the coming days.
