Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Tablet Video Review
      #41414 - 09/29/11 06:30 PM

Subtract 1.2 inches and a quarter pound from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 10.1 inch Android Honeycomb tablet and you've got the latest addition to Samsung's tablet lineup, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9. This is a WiFi only tablet and it has an 8.9" PLS display that's just as bright and super-saturated as the 10.1" model. Samsung's making many Tab models from the original 7" (last year's tech) to this year's lineup of the 7.7, 8.9 and 10.1" tablets. Heck, there's even a hybrid phone-tablet with a 5.3" display that was recently shown at the IFA trade show.

The Galaxy Tab 8.9 runs Android OS 3.1 Honeycomb with Samsung TouchWiz software that we like quite well on tablets. It's familiar if you've used a Samsung Android smartphone, but tweaked an tuned for tablets. It has WiFi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, a GPS and a gig of RAM. As with most Honeycomb tablets, it's available in 16 and 32 gig versions. The tablet has a gig of RAM and runs on the usual NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core 1GHz CPU with hardware graphics acceleration. It manages better scores in Quadrant than the 10.1" tab: 2400 vs. 2100, but Quadrant isn't everything. In terms of software, design and ergonomics, the Tab 8.9 is the near spitting image of the 10.1" model.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Tab 8.9

You won't save much money by downsizing: at $469 and $569, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 is just $30 cheaper than the 10.1" model. But this is more about comfort and a slight increase in portability, given that the tablets are fairly close in size and have the same features.

Here's our Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 video review:
