iPad Case Review: Mapi Orion Leather iPad 2/iPad 3 Case Review

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 4

What's Hot: Nicely built with good leather, good color choices, flexible stand.

What's Not: It's expensive.

Mapi makes fine leather cases and sleeves for mobile devices, and if you've been following our iOS device case reviews you've seen their Orion iPhone 4/4S Case. Take the Orion iPhone 4S case, and blow it up to fit the iPad, you've the Mapi Orion Leather iPad 2/iPad 3 case with almost the exact design. The Mapi Orion Leather case fits the iPad 2 as well as the new iPad 3rd gen, and it comes in five colors including black, white, red, brown and orange.

The Mapi Orion Leather case has a unique design with the front cover ribbed in landscape orientation instead of portrait orientation like the Apple Smart Cover. This design gives you more flexibility on how you want to prop up your iPad 2 and the new iPad 3rd gen using the built-in stand. The case has a top-loading tablet holder that's super easy to use. It shuts on the back with a strong snap. The Mapi Orion Leather case is made with high quality leather that's finished in media grain to provide a better grip. The case has a soft interior lining to ensure that you don't scratch the tablet while handling it with the case.

As with other Mapi cases we've seen, the Mapi Orion Leather case is nicely built with even and strong stitching and smoothed out edges. Both the front cover and the back pocket have strong and stiff inserts for extra shock protection. Even though there are parts on the back add some bulk to the tablet, the case looks and feels slim and fits the iPad 2 and iPad 3 like a glove. The case weighs 12.6 ounces.

The Mapi Orion Leather for iPad 2 and iPad 3 is a highly functional case. The top loading design not only makes it easy to put the tablet in and take it out of the case, it also leaves the power on/off button, the 3.5mm audio jack on top open for easy access, and there is a cutout for the top mic and it works for both the iPad 2 and iPad 3. The case has a long cutout on the side for the volume buttons and the screen button. The round cutout on the back leaves the rear camera exposed, and the bottom cutouts give you access to the 30-pin connector as well as let the audio through the speaker grill.

The front of the case has a cutout for the front camera and sensor, and a semi-circle cutout for the Home button. The Mapi Orion Leather cases covers the bezel around the front display, but leaves out a small space before the bezel meets the screen. We've had no trouble using the touch screen while our iPad 3 was in this case.

The front display cover breaks into 4 parts and they fold like a Smart Cover, except in a different orientation. The front cover attaches to the back of the case, and it's rotatable, which means you can prop up the iPad on all four edges. The cover has a concealed magnetic closure, which keeps the cover shut but won't give you auto wake-up and sleep feature.

The Mapi Orion Leather case for the iPad 2 and iPad 3 is a very form fitting case that looks good and easy to use. We like the flexibility of the stand and the 5 popular color choices. The case has a professional look and is well made with good material. All ports, camera and buttons are accessible and it works with both iPad 2 and iPad 3 perfectly.
