Microsoft Shows Off Windows Phone 8, Says You'll Get 7.8
      #42861 - 06/20/12 08:51 PM

At Microsoft's developer event in San Franciso today, the company put Windows Phone 8 on parade, due out late this year. There are lot of hugely important improvements and additions here, including:

- Support for higher resolution displays up to 1280 x 768
- Multi-core processor support
- MicroSD cards (in a useable way, not the mess that was the Samsung Focus)
- Internet Explorer 10 with HTML5
- Revised Start screen (see image below)

The mobile OS will share lots of code with Windows 8 for desktops/tablets/laptops. Interesting.

Existing Windows Phone owners can upgrade to Windows 7.8 with the updated Start screen. And now the bad news: Windows Phone 8 WILL NOT run on existing models. Your new Nokia Lumia 900 is on the outs (as is mine). Bummer. Microsoft says the hardware requirements are too high for existing handsets (we bet you need a dual core CPU and a beefier GPU).
