iPad Case Review: The Sherpa Magnetic Case with Shoulder Strap for iPad 2 and New iPad Review

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 4.5

What's Hot: Slim and sleek, shoulder strap is convenient and the built-in stand works well.

What's Not: Cutouts could be better positioned.

Shepard Carry makes several iPad carrying cases that come with shoulder straps so that you can carry your iPad hands free. These leather cases are slim yet very protective. Sherpa Carry makes several models including the Sherpa Scribe which comes with a keyboard, the Original Sherpa, the Sherpa Magnetic which has magnetic closure built into the case and the River Sherpa which is coming soon with splash protection. We look at the Sherpa Magnetic Case in Midnight black for this review. The Sherpa Magnetic Case also comes in Camel color.

Design

The Sherpa Magnetic Case is made with fine grained leather and it's form fitting. The portfolio case has a tablet holder on the right that fits the iPad 2 as well as the new iPad 3rd gen. The exterior of the Sherpa case has soft, fine grained leather and the interior is lined with microsuede. A long closure tab with strong Velcro keeps the tablet holder shut by latching onto the microsuede-like interior. The tablet holder uses strong elastic pieces on the sides to hold the iPad 2 or the new iPad in place. The front cover has a closure tab with snap to keep the cover closed securely. There are half ring shoulder strap holders on the Sherpa case which comes with a durable shoulder strap.

Both the front and back of the Sherpa Magnetic Case for the iPad has strong inserts and feel rigid. This design not only gives the new iPad great protection from scratches, bumps, nicks and even drops, but also makes it strong enough to use the shoulder strap to carry the weight of the tablet and the case. The shoulder strap is slim in leather and goes with the case very well. It has heavy duty O-ring hooks that are easy to put on or take off.

Features

The Sherpa Magnetic Case for iPad uses elastic pieces on the sides of the tablet holder. The case leaves out the areas where the iPad has buttons and ports, and has a cutout for the rear camera. It's pretty easy to use the buttons on the iPad including the power button on the top and the volume buttons and the screen lock button on the side. The audio jack is exposed for easy access on the top but there's no cutout for the top mic. The speaker grill on the bottom back is completely exposed and lets the audio through. The cutout for the 30-pin connector however isn't centered, but it doesn't prevent you from using the sync cable. The cutout for the rear camera is centered.

The Sherpa Magnetic Case for the iPad 2 and the new iPad has a built-in stand. It uses the strong Velcro on the outside of the closure tab for the tablet holder to stick to the micro fiber on the interior to create any viewing angle you desire. The stand is quite steady once you push the Velcro firmly into the fiber. The Sherpa Magnetic Case is the only case currently in the Sherpa Carry's line up that offers magnetic closure cover. The case weighs 14.8 ounces with the shoulder strap.

Conclusion

It's quite amazing to see a leather case this slim and looks this good with a shoulder strap. But the whole package has a sleek and modern look, and it does make carrying your iPad out in the field a lot easier. It's very convenient when you don't have to take the tablet out of another bag and the carrying case has all the built-in protection a regular case offers. The built-in stand works well for working on documents, watching movies or video chat. We like the two subtle and professional colors that go with the design very well. The cutouts could be better as the 30-pin connector isn't centered in the cutout and the top mic doesn't have one.
