Microsoft has shared more information about their Surface tablet, including pricing. The tablet goes up for preorder today at noon EST at www.surface.com and it starts at $499 for the 32 gig model. $599 scores you the tablet plus keyboard cover and $599 gets you the tablet, cover and 64 rather than 32 gigs of storage. This is a Windows 8 RT tablet that runs on the Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core (same as Android tablets) and it has 2 gigs of RAM. Windows 8 RT runs the Modern UI (the new name for the Metro UI) with Live Tiles, but not the Windows desktop UI. It runs apps compiled for ARM, not Intel. In other words, if you want the full Windows experience with all your Windows apps, full Windows 8 is your pick rather than RT.
The Touch Cover is avaiilable in black, white, magenta, cyan and red, and it sells for $119 if purchased separately. If you prefer a thicker and somewhat more tactile typing experience, Microsoft offers the 5.5mm thick Type Cover in black for $129.
