Bluetooth Speaker Review: Divoom Voombox Bluetooth Speaker Review
      #46221 - 03/26/14 03:21 PM

The Divoom Voombox Bluetooth Speaker is a rugged portable wireless speaker that works with your smartphones, tablets and laptops. It has strong construction and it's water resistant and shockproof. The speaker offers incredibly loud volume for a speaker this size and very good clarity for both media playing and voice calls. The Divoom Voombox Bluetooth Speaker comes in black, blue, red and forest green.

Design

The Divoom Voombox Bluetooth Speaker comes in an understated rectangular box that has sturdy metal frames and shock absorbent rubber housing. The speaker encloses dual 2" drivers in its shockproof shell, and robust metal grills cover the front and back of the speaker. The only part that comes in different colors is the ribbed rubber housing that covers four large control buttons and the only two ports on the speaker. The control buttons include power on/off button, volume buttons and a multi-function button that works as play/pause, receive/end calls and Bluetooth Pairing button. The 3.5mm AUX port and the micro USB charging port live on the side of the speaker under a rubber cover.

The speaker has a small LED light in the front that indicates power on, Bluetooth status as well as battery charging status. It also has a built-in mic for voice calls. The speaker measures 7.28 x 2.36 x 3.07 inches and it weighs 1.64 pounds. The Voombox comes with a USB charging cable, a 3.5mm audio cable and a wrist strap that you can connect to the strap holder on the side of the speaker.

Bluetooth

The Divoom Voombox Bluetooth Speaker has built-in Bluetooth 4.0 and supports stereo profiles for playing music, movies and games wirelessly as well as hands free profiles to make and receive phone calls. Using the Bluetooth to connect with your devices is easy. The first time you turn on the speaker it'll go into pairing mode automatically. For subsequent pairing, while the speaker is turned on, press and hold the multi-function button to put the speaker in pairing mode. The Voombox can pair with multiple devices but can only connect with one device. We tested the speaker with several smartphones and tablets, it paired and connected with all easily.

Sound

The Divoom Voombox Bluetooth Speaker has dual 7.5W 2" full range drivers, 2 passive woofer with a tweeter. The speaker has frequency response range of 100Hz to 20kHz. The Divoom Voombox Bluetooth Speaker is one of the loudest sounding portable Bluetooth speakers we've ever seen, and it has very little distortion even with volume turned to max. Music and movie playback sound clear and full thanks to good tuning of the speakers. Music tracks sound balanced and well presented in full dynamic range; movie dialogues sound clear and FX sounds powerful and full. Voice calls also have good clarity and very loud volume. There's no delay or sound degradation via Bluetooth when compared to audio through the AUX port.

Battery

The Divoom Voombox Bluetooth Speaker has a built-in rechargeable battery that's 3200mAh in capacity. The speaker comes with a USB charging cable and takes about 3-4 hours to fully charge the battery. Battery life is decent but not stellar. We got about 5 hours of music/video playback and about 8 hours of talk time. Standby time wasn't great in our tests either. It lasted two days with minimal use.

Conclusion

The Divoom Voombox Bluetooth Speaker is one of the loudest portable speakers in this size and offers very good sound quality and clarity. The rugged design and construction land this speaker at pool parties and outdoor BBQ cookouts nicely, and it can certainly generate enough sound for a large party. For indoor use, you'll likely need to turn down the volume, but it functions well as a conference speaker as well as movie and music speaker for your smartphone or tablet. The Voombox isn't light and the battery life could be better.
