Acer Iconia A1-830 8 inch Android Tablet Video Review
      #46237 - 03/31/14 09:15 AM

Unless you want an iPad or iPad mini, it's not easy to find an Android tablet with a 4:3 aspect ratio display. Acer comes to the rescue with an 8" midrange Android 4.2 Jelly Bean tablet with a 4:3 aspect ratio IPS display, Intel Atom dual core CPU and cameras front and rear. Unlike the Kindle Fire HDX and 2013 Nexus 7 that sport 7" widescreen displays in glorious full HD, the Acer Iconia A1-830 has a 1024 x 786 display. But for $200 how much can you expect?

And that's the ticket with the Acer Iconia A1: it's a name brand tablet that you can trust in a sea of inexpensive tablets from companies you've never heard of. I suspect Acer is competing against those no-name budget tablets rather than the Nexus and Kindle devices that sell at an aggressive low to no margin price. Still, it's hard to ignore those two, particularly the Nexus 7 since it too runs full Android like the Iconia A1. The Acer does have a few selling points vs. the Nexus, including a larger display, the 4:3 aspect ratio (if that's something you crave), a microSD card slot and metal in the casing.

The 13.2 ounce Acer Iconia A1-830 runs on a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Clovertrail Z2560 with a gig of RAM and 16 gigs of internal storage plus a microSD card slot. It's snappier than some Intel Atom Android tablets we've reviewed, and the very straightforward Android presentation doesn't bog things down as might heavy skins. The tablet has a front 2MP and rear 5MP camera and a GPS. It's powered by a 4,000 mAh battery and it has WiFi 802.11n and Bluetooth 3.0.
