Smartphone Case Review: UAG Outland Case for HTC One M8 Review
      #46594 - 06/18/14 04:17 PM

The Urban Armor Gear's Outland case for the HTC One M8 follows the company's signature impact resistant case design with two layers of protection and comes with a screen protector. The Outland case passes MIL STD 810G drop-test and it's thin and light. As with UAG cases for other phones, the case also comes in blue (Aero), white (Navigator), black (Scout) and clear (maverick).

Design

The UAG Outland Case for HTC One M8 marries rugged protection and a thin body. The case looks like a military hardware case, but it's actually quite thin and weighs only 1.2 ounces. The strong protection comes from both the hard shell and the impact absorbing soft core fused together to prevent scratches, bumps and nicks to the phone as well as to provide structural support. The corners of the case have thicker material, and the top and bottom of the case have only the soft cover to make it easier for you to install the case and take it off. The case has raised front edges to give the phone's screen some protection when you put the phone face down. It works with the included protector film for the HTC One M8's display.

The UAG Outland Case for HTC One M8 has its unique look in all colors with its faux screws and bold creases. The case has just the right amount of the rubber-like material covering the phone's top and sides for better handling and a better grip. Though form fitting, the UAG Outland Case for HTC One M8 doesn't contour the subtle curve on the back of the HTC One M8.

Features

The UAG Outland Case for HTC One M8 is a very functional case thanks to the design details. The case protects the volume buttons and the power button under the soft cover, but has a cutout for the power button to expose the IR port. The IR window works well as long as you point the phone directly at the AV gear. The buttons are very easy to use under the covered protection. All ports on the bottom of the phone (charging/syncing micro USB port and 3.5mm audio jack) offer easy access, and the case has thinner layer near the ports so that it can work with more accessories. The case has perfect cutouts for the rear cameras, flash and the mic; and the film protector leaves out the front speakers, LED, sensors and the earpiece.

Conclusion

If you're looking for a rugged case that look rugged but doesn't add much weight or thickness to your M8, the UAG Outland or any other color is worth a look. The case passes MIL-STD 810G 516.6 (shock) tests, though we didn't drop our M8 to see if it'd survive. But it's suffice to say that for daily use and occasional drops, the UAG will protect your phone from shock damage and scratches. The case covers the back and sides and the included film protector covers the display. We love all the colors in this collection, and the convenience of the cutouts on the case. The IR window does narrow the view under the cover, but it works as long as you aim it directly at your AV.
