Wicked EVAC Headphones Review
      #47179 - 10/21/14 08:16 PM

The Wicked EVAC headphones wish to paint their wearers as some elite forces escaping from battlefield or rough terrain on a helicopter wearing the retro military-looking headphones. Underneath the vague army fatigues style packing and the me-against-the-world bravado you'll a decent sounding pair of headphones that possess accentuated bass, spacious audio and very effective noise isolation. The Wicked EVAC offers good-sized drivers and reasonably clear audio. For the price (under $50), the headphones have a lot to offer.

The Wicked EVAC has a standout style in all three color options thanks to the rounded ear cups that are both retro and chic. The headphones come in black with white Wicked Audio's logo printed on the ear cups, in white with black logo and Army green with black logo. The headphones are comfortable to wear thanks to the very thick cushions on the ear cups, and the adjustable length of the headband. The ear cups aren't very large; and they should fit small to medium sized ears but if you have large ears, the cups might be a bit too small and might pinch your ears. The headband has nice foam padding that helps alleviate fatigue for your head. The ear cups connect with the headband via metal wires and hinges that can fold up the ear cups for easy transport.

The Wicked EVAC headphones come with 4 feet braided cord that's flexible yet not easily tangled up. The cord color matches the color of the headphones. The Wicked EVAC offers large 40mm audio driver and the 2-ring 3.5mm audio plug has gold plating. The Wicked EVAC doesn't have a mic for voice calls.

The Wicked EVAC has loud audio and very good noise isolation. The double-thickness of the earmuffs helps block out ambient noise and also prevent audio leaking out from the headphones. The large drivers pump out good volume on all channels for music playback, movie sound effects and game audio. The extra space the ear cups provide gives sound some room to breathe.

The sound quality is good for a pair of headphones in this price range ($20-$50). The biggest characteristic of the headphones is its accentuated bass. It's not only noticeable in music tracks in Rock or Rap genres where bass is used often, but in classical chamber music, symphonies and of course, in movie sound FX such as booming explosions. Even vocals and voice-overs have deeper bass than via other headphones. This universally enhanced bass gives many audio pieces a large presence and in tracks that are mastered with bass in mind, the headphones translate those admirably.

As often the case, unless you get into multi-hundred dollar price range, headphones with very noticeably strong bass skews the audio spectrum towards the low and leaves the treble thin or muddy. The Wicked EVAC has some of that but not too back. Treble in both voice and instrument tracks sounds passable, not super clear but not muddy. The Wicked EVAC has 103 dB and dynamic range is good. The headphones offer frequency range of 20 Hz-20 KHz.

The Wicked EVAC is a great choice for those who need a pair of headphones that are workhorse for the daily commute and plane trips. The headphones aren't for the audiophiles who're looking for their next greatest hit but for travelers who want to block out background noise while enjoying music or movies. The strong bass gives Rock, Rap and Workout music their intended effects and lending the booming and pounding power to heavy movie sound FX. We like the urban attitude of the presentation and all three colors of the Wicked EVAC. Downsides include treble doesn't sound very clear, the ear cups might be too small for some users and no built-in mic for phone calls.

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 4
What's Hot: Unique style, very strong bass, loud volume.
What's Not: Needs more clarity for treble.
