Moshi Vortex Headset with Mic Review
      #47430 - 12/16/14 10:09 PM

The Vortex and the Vortex Pro are two high-end in-ear headsets in Moshi Audio's repertoire that's comprised of uniquely designed earphones. The Vortex Pro (in white) has a bit larger drivers (9mm) than the Vortex (in black) which has 8mm drivers, and a 3-button control stick on the Pro version vs. the one button control on the Vortex. Otherwise, these two models have similar designs and features. The Moshi Vortex has metal driver chambers that help keep the audio clear and bass accentuated. The Vortex headset is great for music genres that emphasize on mids and bass.

Design

The Moshi Vortex Headset has a unique design. The first thing you'll notice is the earbuds are weightier than most headsets. That's because the earbuds are made with steel alloy that not only protects the drivers and components inside well but also gives the audio the integrity thanks to the rigid chamber walls. Another design feature that makes this headset stand out from the crowd is the right earbud and the left one have different color silicone tips, saving you the trouble of searching for the tiny little letter that tells you which ear the earbud goes in. The triangle shape of the earbuds gives the headset a sleek and modern look.

The Moshi Vortex Headset has a 3.9' braided cable that's lightweight and long lasting. The control stick has a built-in mic for voice calls and a volume rocker. The three-ring 3.5mm audio plug is gold plated and the headset comes with a unique looking cord winder that can store your headset in style. The Moshi Vortex Headset comes with three sets of dome-shaped silicone tips and one pair of column shaped memory foam tips in case you're allergic to silicone.

Audio Quality

The Moshi Vortex Headset has the HR8 neodymium drivers that have 10Hz-20kHz range (-10dB @ 1kHz) with 100 +/- 3dB @ 1kHz sensitivity and up to 23dB noise isolation. The Vortex is sonic tuned best for specific genres of music that includes Rock, Pop, Hip Pop, R&B and Electronic; and it shows. The clarity is good on highs, mids and lows, but the best audio comes from mids and bass. In music tracks that feature pronounced bass engineering, the Moshi Vortex brings that out and gives the bass some special treatment that you don't think small earbuds could give. The metal chamber and the audio tuning work together to fully translate the bass arrangements. The audio in mids is very clear and has great separation and dynamic. The mids sound brighter than the mids on the V-Moda Revamp for example, though the V-moda has more balanced sound. The only thing that might give you pause to use the Vortex for all music genres is the highs which can be screechy. In particularly Classical music, you can sometimes hear breaking and screeching in high violin pieces. Some tracks with high vocals can also sound breaking at the top. If you're listening to symphonies, violin and high brass instruments or high vocal singing tracks, the Vortex isn't the headset for you.

Conclusion

For most popular music listening, movie watch and gaming playing, the Moshi Vortex Headset provides very clear audio, excellent bass and subtle but noticeable style that stands out from the pack. The build is sturdy and long lasting and the headset is very comfortable to wear. We love the bass performance and the clarity on the this headset, and only wish the highs were better tuned. For a premium headset, you can get it at a very reasonable street price.
