Henge Docks Gravitas for iPhone 6/6 Plus Review
      #47712 - 02/16/15 09:14 PM

Henge Docks' Gravitas dock existed for the iPhone 5/5s and the iPhone 5c. Now thanks to its ingenious design that gives it the most flexibility to fit just about any phone or tablet, the Gravitas can work with the new iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus as well as the new iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini. All it takes to switch the devices is changing the inserts on the dock. The Gravitas is available for devices with either a Lightning port or a 30-pin port, and it comes with stand inserts for the iPhone 5/5s, iPhone 5c, iPad mini and iPad Air. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus inserts are sold separately.

Design

The first thing you'll notice about the Gravitas dock is its weight. At only 3.5" diameter, the Gravitas weighs impressive 2.54 pounds. This allows the dock to stay put while you dock and undock your device one handedly. The brushed-metal dock comes with either a Lightning connector or if you have any earlier Apple devices, a 30-pin connector, both in black. The front of the dock has a channel cutout to give you access to the iPhone's or iPad's Home button. On the back of the Gravitas, you'll find a full size USB for charging and syncing and a 3.5mm audio jack for audio out since the dock blocks the 3.5mm audio jack on the phone. The Gravitas adds a splash of modern style to your desk while takes very little space. The weight of the dock means it'll likely live on your desk instead of traveling with you in your gear bag.

Features

The biggest magic trick the Gravitas offers is the interchangeable docking inserts. It's quite easy to take out one plastic insert, just pull the insert up by lifting on one side, and put in another. The dock comes with several inserts for the iPhone 5 models and iPad models, and you can get additional inserts for the new iPhone 6 models for $5 extra. This design allows one dock to serve as many devices with the same connector through many generations. The inserts fit the device perfectly, but they won't fit when your phone or tablet is in a case. There's a layer of inner lining on the insert and when you take that off, the insert can fit your device in a slim case. Taking the inner lining off is a challenge though, something you wouldn't want to do often.

The Gravitas offers both charging and syncing for your Apple device via the full size USB on the back of the dock. In our tests, the iPhone 6 charged and synced nicely while connected to the dock. The viewing angle the dock positions the phone or tablet is a bit too straight. It's comfortable for web page viewing and ebook reading, but a little too upright for FaceTime or typing on the on-screen keyboard.

Conclusion

The Henge Docks Gravitas is a very functional dock that takes very little space on your desk yet offers both charging and syncing for your iPhone 6 or iPad Air 2. The dock is weighty and never moves when you dock and undock your device. The insert concept gives this dock the longevity that many accessories just don't offer, and allows one dock to charge and sync any Lightning device you have. We love the modern look of the Gravitas but we wish Henge Docks would offer an iPhone 6/6 Plus package that comes with iPhone 6/6 Plus inserts instead of the iPhone 5 model inserts that most people will throw away after they upgrade their phone.
