Moshi VersaKeyboard for iPad Air 2 Review
      #47874 - 03/30/15 06:59 PM

The Moshi VersaKeyboard is their VersaCover case with a portable keyboard attached to the back. The Moshi VersaKeyboard case fits the iPad Air 2 and you can slide the keyboard in and out of the holder tracks on the back of the case easily. Like the VersaCover, the keyboard case has origami style front cover that doubles as a stand and it can position the iPad in both landscape and portrait angles. The Moshi VersaKeyboard comes in only black.

Design

The Moshi VersaKeyboard is basically the VersaCover case in terms of the protection it provides. The tablet fits perfectly in the slim shell case that's easy to put on and take off. The case also features the same origami front cover that can also turn into a stand. Unlike the VersaCover that has a clear plastic back and the cover that comes in four colors, the VersaKeyboard has a solid black plastic back and the cover comes in only black. The back of the case has a keyboard holder that keeps the keyboard attached to the case securely. The tracks allow the keyboard to slide in and out easily. The keyboard adds 7.7 ounces to the 5.71-ounce case and some thickness. Like the VersaCover, the VersaKeyboard protects the entire iPad Air 2.

Keyboard

The detachable keyboard measures 9.1" wide, which allows large enough keys and good spacing between the keys that your hands won't feel cramped. The keyboard has normal layout with two double-sized shift keys on each side and a long space bar. There's a delete key on the top right corner, and four directional keys on the bottom right. The keyboard has a control key on the left side, double Apple keys and double option/alt keys on each side. A Fn key controls the functions keys sharing with the number keys, and these iPad-specific functions include Home screen launcher, on-screen keyboard launcher, select keys, cut/paste/delete shortcut keys, multimedia controls, volume/mute control keys, Bluetooth key, battery key and screen lock key. The keyboard is very thin, which results to short key travel. The keys have good tactile feedback, which helps with the short key travel. While it isn't too hard to get used to the short key travel on the keyboard, the Space Bar in particular is hard to register.

Features

The Moshi VersaKeyboard's case functions as well as their VersaCover. The cutouts are very well placed and they give you easy access to all ports and buttons. You should have no trouble using any headphones and sync/charge cables with the iPad Air 2 in this case. Docking stations and speakers might have some trouble if the Lightning plugs on them aren't very long. The front cover on the VersaKeyboard works as well as the VersaCover's. It can create many viewing angles in both landscape and portrait orientations and hold the iPad Air 2 steadily for media viewing, video chatting, ebook reading and most of all, in a good position for you to see the screen while typing on the portable keyboard. The front cover also supports iPad's auto wake and sleep feature.

Conclusion

With more and more people using the iPad Air 2 as their productivity tools, having a keyboard that's both portable and usable becomes essential. The VersaKeyboard offers a good combination of a slim and protective case with an easy attaching and detaching keyboard that's slim and light. The keyboard has nice and large keys and a normal layout with essential controls for iPad-specific functions. We love the design of the VersaKeyboard and the built-in stand that works well with the keyboard. We only wish the space bar on the keyboard were easier to press, the only big flaw on this otherwise excellent offering.

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 4
What's Hot: Very nice combo that gives protection to the tablet and offers keyboard.
What's Not: Space bar is too hard to press for fast touch typists.
