PowerSkin Pop'n 3 4000mAh External Battery Review
      #47974 - 04/23/15 05:32 PM

The PowerSkin Pop'n 3 is an external battery pack designed for the on-the-go mobile phone user who prefers to use his/her device minimally encumbered (no case/minimal case). It comes either with a Lightning port connector for the iPhone models or a micro USB connector for other smartphones. We look at the version that comes with a Lightning connector in this review. The PowerSkin Pop'n 3 is sleek for an external battery, but expect it to more than double the weight of your phone while you are using it. Small enough to attach to an iPhone 5, it will easily slip into your purse or briefcase when not in use, although it's slightly too big to carry around every day in most pockets.

Features and Quality

The Pop'n 3 is made by PowerSkin; a company with a long history of making reliable and safe battery cases for Apple devices. Featuring all the proprietary technology found in their battery cases like safety mechanisms and smart power management, this iteration of the Pop'n battery line is the most versatile yet, thanks to the switch from a rigid and bulky port connector to a flexible cable. Thankfully, this cable is designed to be twisted and flexed in order to make the necessary connection so don't worry about it fraying or splitting like a standard cable. Attaching it to your phone is dead simple; as long as your phone doesn't have a case installed. Yes, there are quite a few iPhone users who enjoy using their devices the way Apple intended: au naturel. Some cases will work with the Pop'n 3; just make sure yours has an unobstructed Lightning Port and a smooth back. Those of you who prefer a more protective solution, will probably be better off with one of PowerSkin's other products such as their more universal Recharge external battery or one of their excellent battery cases. With a 4,000mAh capacity, the Pop'n 3 will more than double the battery life of your iPhone, including the mammoth 6 Plus. Unfortunately, the output is only 1A so it is not intended to work with iPads and large tablets.

Style

The Pop'n 3 comes in the same three colors of Apple's iPhones (gold, grey, silver). While it's not something you are meant to use continuously, it's nice that PowerSkin went to the trouble of making it match your device.

Summary

If you prefer to use your iPhone caseless, or minimally so, and find yourself running out of juice while you're on the go, the Pop'n 3 is a great choice. It's compact, powerful, and even somewhat stylish. If your daily use case has a textured or soft finish, it will likely not stick. it will still work, however, as long as your Lightning Port is unobstructed, and you don't mind dealing with two separate objects in your purse/pocket that are tethered by a cable.

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 4
What's Hot: Integrated Lightning Connector. Attaches/detaches easily to the back of your phone, and most smooth cases. 4000mAh capacity. Available in colors to match your iPhone.
What's Not: Will not attach to soft-touch or textured cases. Lightning cable needs an unobstructed port in order to fit. 1A output means it is not intended for iPads.
