CM4 Q Card Case Limited Edition for iPhone 6/6 Plus Review
      #48009 - 05/07/15 02:23 AM

CM4's Q Card Case Limited Edition provides great bump/scuff protection for your phone, and a top grain leather card wallet on the back. As with all wallet cases, however, be careful what you put in there if you intend to use your phone in a public place.

Size and Fit

The Q Card Case will fit your device perfectly, as you'd expect from a company like CM4. Once installed, it will add very little to the size of your phone as it is essentially a minimalist case. Even the incorporated wallet on the back doesn't seem to add noticeable bulk thanks to some clever engineering (the case is thinner behind the wallet, allowing it to be slightly recessed). Once you start filling it up, however, expect it to get accordingly thicker and heavier.

Features and Quality

The Q Case is available in both a standard and limited edition; the difference being the construction of the wallet portion. Both are extremely well-made, with strong stitching and quality materials. However, the limited edition is made of top grain leather instead of fabric. This may seem like a small thing, but once you get your hands on the leather version, you won't want to go back. Being someone with more than a passing appreciation for quality leather, I was quite pleased to see that the Q Case is constructed of top grain leather, NOT bonded leather. There are three basic categories of leather commercially available: Full, top, and bonded. Full grain leather is the best because it uses the leather's full thickness. It is also not appropriate for every use because it is quite thick, stiff, and heavy. The "top" in top grain leather is so named because it uses the topmost layer, which is typically the strongest single portion of the leather. In an application like this, it is more suitable than full grain because it's much thinner, yet is still beautiful and quite durable. Bonded leather is the most inexpensive, and is the least beautiful/durable of the three. It is made by gluing scraps of leather together. It's easy to spot because its very soft, and has an almost furry look to it. Lastly, the Q Case has a clever little slot on its back that allows you to use one of your cards as a kickstand to prop the case up for hands-free viewing.

Whenever I review wallet cases, I find myself quite conflicted. On the one hand, manufacturers are only giving the public the convenience it wants. On the other hand, I don't think most people realize that cases like this are not safe for public use because the user's credit cards and cash are visible to all. If a brand new iPhone isn't motivation enough for thieving minds, sweetening the deal with cash and credit cards might be. In the end, however, the responsibility must lie with the user; so please be careful what you store in wallet cases, especially when using your phone in places where a reasonable person would not feel safe, such as public transportation, or gathering areas (especially when using one of your cards as a kickstand, and then setting it down in front of you!).

Style

The Q Case Limited Edition comes only in brown to match the top grain leather. However, regular version is available in black, gold, green, grey, and red.

Summary

The Q Case is one of the best wallet cases I've seen, and the Limited Edition is a thing of beauty if you appreciate that sort of thing (as I do). It's well-made, stylish, provides basic everyday protection, and its wallet portion is convenient as heck. Just be aware of your surroundings if you intend to stuff cash or credit cards into it, or use a credit card as a kickstand.
