Soen Transit XS Portable Wireless Speaker Review
      #48099 - 05/29/15 07:08 PM

Last year we looked at the Soen Transit Wireless Speaker whose powerful sound, superior clarity and the portable form impressed us. This year, Soen has released an even smaller and more portable Bluetooth wireless speaker, the Transit XS, with mountable design and equally superior audio performance. The Transit XS is now available on Amazon and other retailer stores. The Soen's smaller speaker comes in black, white, blue, purple and red.

Design

The Transit XS has a very similar design to the Transit and has shrunk down to 6.3 x 2.6 x 1 inches. Instead of a foldable desk stand, the Transit XS has a screw-mount and you can use the included clip to attach the speaker to your sun visor, your bike or other places, or use other mounting solutions for custom locations. Though the Transit XS looks modern and clean, it's deceivingly rugged. Its housing is made with solid aluminum with brushed finish, hard grille cover and thick TPU rubber edges for shock absorption. It can certainly survive some bumps and scuffs and withstand the daily wear and tear if you take it with you in your car or on your bicycle. The Soen Transit XS weighs 9.8 ounces.

All the buttons and ports on the Transit XS are mounted under the brushed aluminum frame. You'll find three control buttons on the top of the speaker, including the volume up and down buttons and the option/Bluetooth Connect button. The Transit XS has a power on/off slider that lives on the side of the speaker, along with the AUX 3.5mm jack, the micro USB charging port and the four LED lights that indicate battery levels and Bluetooth pairing status. The speaker is easy to pair with all smartphones and tablets.

Sound

The Transit XS features the same superior sound and technology found on the bigger Transit. The powerful Neodymium transducers produce such power sound in high volume that it'll surprise those who don't know about the Transit speaker. Not only can the sound from the Transit XS fill in a large room or over the ambient noise of outdoors, the audio has superior clarity and extremely powerful bass resonance. We tested music tracks from different genres and found the Transit XS reproduced everything in a clear, balanced but never meek presentation. Classical tracks had clear sound from each instruments, Rap and R&B tracks had beautiful vocals and deep bass, and Rock and Dance/Workout tracks were loud and clear.

For those who watch movies on their smartphones and laptops, the Transit XS can fight some loud ambient noise like exercise machines and give you more immersive watching experience. Dialogues are easy to hear and special FX sounds explosive thanks to the deep booming bass. The Transit XS supports both mono profiles and A2DP stereo profiles. This means you can control your music playback and video playback with the speaker's controls and also you can take and make phone calls using the Transit XS as well. The Transit XS has a built-in mic that lives under the front grille in the center. Call audio sounds equally full, clear and loud via the Transit XS.

Battery

The Transit XS has built-in rechargeable lithium battery and comes with a USB charging cable. The battery isn't huge, but it can last you 6-7 hours of music and video playback. The battery has decent standby time but not exceptional.

Conclusion

If you're looking for a small portable wireless speaker but you don't want to sacrifice the audio quality or volume, the Transit XS should be among your top choices, if not the top choice. The audio quality suppresses many portable speakers in this size or even larger than the Transit XS. The volume and bass out perform the small body and you'll rarely find the audio clarity this pure on a portable speaker. The smaller body, compared to the Transit, means you can take it in your pocket or mount it to your car or bike for truly portable experience. It works with any smartphone, tablet, gaming consoles and other gadgets with Bluetooth support.
