HP Pro Slate 12 Video Review - 12" Android Tablet with Pen
      #48161 - 06/12/15 06:44 PM

Android tablets used to be a hot commodity, but now we rarely see interesting and innovative new models. HP's business line packs a surprise. Their Pro Slate 12 (also available in an 8 inch size) is unusually large, and even more intriguing; it packs an ultrasonic pen that works on screen and on paper. HP's Duet Pen actually works very well when writing on the 12.3", 1600 x 1200 display, with good tracking speed, pressure sensitivity and palm rejection. Even more exciting is that it works if you put a piece or pad of paper beside the tablet--flip the tip to ball point, and you can write to your heart's content and have it replicated in the HP Notes app on the tablet. Of course, HP would like you to buy their folio case with a slot for a pad of paper, but it works without. The folio positions the pad properly along the side of the tablet where 5 mics pick up the ultrasounds to determine pen movement (you can rotation the folio for left handed use).

Otherwise, the $569 list price tablet packs decent but not cutting edge specs. It has a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU, 2 gigs of RAM and 32 gigs of storage. There's a microSD card slot, dual band WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. Build quality is very good, as expected for a business class tablet, and it runs Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. The OS isn't heavily skinned, and it's a responsive and clean experience. HP sells the usual accessories business folks crave like a portable dock, keyboard, higher wattage charger and the folio. The tablet weighs 1.87 lbs., which isn't bad for something with a 12.3" display.
