Griffin WatchStand Review
      #48272 - 07/10/15 03:20 PM

The Griffin WatchStand is an elegant-looking yet simple stand that can prop up your Apple Watch while charging it. The design allows the stand to hide the watch's charging cord and the small charging disc and it can also hold your iPhone so you can keep both of your gadgets off the table or desk. The Griffin WatchStand comes in black and works the best with the Apple Watches that have lighter wristbands.

The Griffin WatchStand has an interesting design. It holds the watch at an angle that makes the small watch screen easy to see. The stand includes a heavily weighted base with anti-skid bottom that ensures the stand won't slide even on a slippery glass or metal surface. The bottom of the stand is also elevated so that the charging cord of the Apple Watch can move freely underneath it. The top of the stand slants forward and works with the raised front edge as a cradle for your iPhone. The center stick is removable, and you can position the watch stand to face any direction. This comes in handy if you wish to keep your phone on the stand and the Apple Watch in vertical position.

The stand stick has two parts: an outer hard shell tube that holds the inner tube on the stand base; and the soft inner tube that you can dock the Apple Watch's charging disc into and hide the charging cord inside. There are two ways to keep the charging cord out of sight. The easier one is just let the cord pass through the hollowed center of the stand stick, and the other one is to wind up the cord around the rubber tracks to shorten the length of the charging cord that comes out of the stand's base. The idea is great, but the diameter of the inner tube is a little too large for the outer shell to accommodate the thickness the cord adds, and as result, the inner tube that's wrapped in the excess cord can't fit into the shell.

The Griffin WatchStand can hold the Apple Watch either vertically or horizontally. It uses the Apple MagSafe magnet in the charging disc to keep the watch on the stand. It's very nice that it doesn't require you to tie the wristband around the stand, however if you're using light wristbands, like the sport bands, the watch can sit on the stand safely, but if you use the heavier metal bands the watch feels a little flimsy on the stand when positioned in horizontal position. The Griffin WatchStand also includes an insert with the stand in case you want the charging disc to sit higher to take advantage of the full magnetic power of the charging disc. The rubber holder of the charging disc also holds heat and in our tests, the Apple Watch felt warmer after a night of charging on the Griffin WatchStand compared to charging it without using the stand.

The Griffin WatchStand is a functional watch stand for the Apple Watch. It saves space on your nightstand or desk as it can hold your watch and your iPhone on one stand. It creates a nice viewing angle for you to quickly check the time and to charge your watch at the same time. It hides the charging disc and the long cord, and the black stand looks elegant in your home or office. The stand's cord winder doesn't work too well as the outer shell is too small to house the inner tube wound in the cord. The stand doesn't need you to re-tie the wristbands to keep the watch on the stand, though heavier metal bands might feel a little flimsy in horizontal position. The Apple Watch also gets wamer when charging using the stand.

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 3.5
What's Hot: Simple design, elegant look, holds both iPhone and Apple Watch.
What's Not: The cord winder is too thick to fit in the shell. Heavier watch bands don't sit on the stand very securely. Charger gets the watch warmer.
