ECOXGEAR Ecopebble Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker Review
      #48320 - 07/24/15 06:12 PM

The Ecopebble is a rugged Bluetooth speaker that can float in the water. It has big sound for a small speaker and decent audio quality as well. The wireless speaker supports stereo and mono Bluetooth profiles, and it can stream music and works as a speakerphone for your phone calls. The Ecopebble is a great backyard, beach or pool speaker as long as you don't need more than 5 feet of wireless range. The speaker comes in black housing and three front grille colors.

The Ecopebble speaker measures 2.9 x 2.8 x 2.8 inches and weighs 8 ounces. The small speaker has a hard shell housing and a thick silicone cover. The front grille comes in blue, black and orange and the speaker behind grille has waterproof protection. The back of the Ecopebble has a removable plate that functions as water seal. Under the plate, you'll find the power on/off slider, the micro USB recharge port, an AUX-in port and an LED light indicating battery and charging status, power on/off and Bluetooth pairing status. When the plate is installed, no moisture will get through. The speaker floats when you toss it in the pool or the ocean, however the weight in the speaker works in such a way that the speaker grille is almost completely submerged and the back of the speaker is floating above the water. It does reduce the volume but it's still usable.

The Ecopebble has large control buttons on the top panel. The buttons includes power on/off and Bluetooth pairing button, play/pause/answer/end call button, and two track selection/speaker volume buttons. All button controls work well except the volume buttons which also share with track selection. A short press should let you change tracks and longer press should let you change the volume. But there'll be times when you want to change the volume you change the track instead. The Ecopebble also comes with a nylon lanyard and a Carabineer so you can hook it onto your backpack or beach bag. Underneath the lanyard is a screw mount that allows you to mount the speaker on your bike or other mounting base or rack.

The Ecopebble has built-in Bluetooth 4.0 and supports both stereo and mono profiles. This means you can stream music, movie and game audio, as well as taking calls via the speaker. The speaker is super easy to pair with any smartphone or tablet thanks to the voice guidance. It's also easy to reconnect after the speaker auto sleeps and powers back on. The Ecopebble has surprisingly short wireless range, reaching no more than 5-7 feet before the signal starts to drop out.

The Ecopebble has good audio clarity and very loud volume. The speaker can easily fill a room or a poolside party, and the small speaker has very good mids and decent highs. Bass isn't strong at all and in some tracks, the bass is almost absent. But the audio doesn't blow out or distort when the volume is turned to high.

The Ecopebble has a 500mAh Lithium battery that's rechargeable. The battery can last you at least 4 hours of continuous music streaming if your phone or tablet is within short range of the speaker. It takes about 2.5 hours to recharge the speaker.

Conclusion

The ECOXGEAR Ecopebble Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker would have been my go-to speaker for pool parties, beach outings and camping ground cookouts. It's completely waterproof, and it floats so that you can swim with it and have your music with you in the pool. It's loud and audio quality is quite decent. It's easy to pair and connect with any mobile device. However the incredibly short Bluetooth range renders it useless in many if not all of the scenarios where such a rugged speaker would be very useful.
