iLuv FitActive Air Bluetooth Sports Earphones Review
      #48342 - 07/30/15 03:38 PM

The iLuv FitActive Air Bluetooth Sports Earphones are designed for athletes who need their music at the gym or pick up phone calls without stopping their bike rides or runs. The FitActive Air is sweat resistant and can stay in your ears during your activities. The earphones offer clear sound, good volume and easy to use Bluetooth that works with phones, tablets and laptops. The iLuv FitActive Air comes in black with red cable or white with white cable.

Compared to some of the popular sports Bluetooth earphones such as the LG Tone Active, the iLuv FitActive Air is incredibly light thanks to the flat cable and small remote. You don't need to wear a "collar" in order to use Bluetooth earphones. The cable is just one inch shy of 2 feet long and there's a removable cable lock that allows you to control the length of the cable. Both the cable and the remote have sweat resistant coating and you can watch them if they get dirty or grimy. The right-handed remote is very easy to use and it allows you to play/pause music, answer and end calls, and change volume (press) and tracks (press and hold). The remote also has a micro USB charging port for recharging the earphones' battery.

The iLuv FitActive Air earphones have large housings and openings. The silicone tips wrap around the openings and channel the audio into smaller sound holes. The ear tips have Fit-Tec's in-ear braces that create another point of stability besides the in-ear tips. It's designed for sports and exercise, and in our tests, the earphones stayed securely during most workout routines even those with rigorous head movements. One problem we had was the size of the earphones; they're too large to wear for more than half an hour without your ears feeing fatigued. We had a couple of people try them on and they found the earphones were too large for their ears. The iLuv comes with two sets of silicone tips and both are on the large side. If you find large earbuds fit your ears better you'll probably love the FitActive Air's size. But if your ears fit smaller earphones better, these will mostly likely be too large for you.

Size Comparison with the Moshi Vortex Earphones

The audio quality is quite good for earphones at this price. Sound is clear and full, dynamic range is decent. Both music and voice calls sound quite loud. Bass isn't very strong however. One thing as result of the design that doesn't extend the ear tips too far into the ears, the audio through the iLuv FitActive Air sounds a little distant. As the FitActive Air is designed to sit closer to the openings of your ear canals to let in more ambient noise, which is great for walkers and runners who need to hear their surroundings and traffic, but it also means you'll need to turn up the volume to hear the music better. Another interesting experience as the result of this design is that you hear more wind noise than you would with normal in-ear buds.

The iLuv FitActive Air has Bluetooth 4.0 and it's very easy to pair. The earphones offer voice guidance for powering on/off and Bluetooth pairing status. It can walk you through the pairing and connecting process. We tested it with several phones, tablets and laptops, the iLuv paired and connected with all easily and quickly. The FitActive Air has plenty of range if you carry your phone in your pocket, on your armband, in your backpack or in your bike saddle.

The iLuv FitActive Air has rechargeable battery and comes with a USB charging cable. The earphones offer up to 5 hours of continuous playtime and up to 150 hours of standby. The iLuv will shut off automatically after a period of inactivity, and you can press the multi-function button on the remote control to turn it back on. The iLuv finds its previous connected phone/tablet/laptop automatically.

Everything on the FitActive Air is designed with athletes in mind including the tangle free, sweat resistant cable and remote, the silicone ear tips and the lightweight. The audio quality is good and volume is loud. It's easy to pair and connect with mobile devices and its battery life is decent. It'll come down to whether you'll be comfortable with the size of these earphones. If they fit your ears, they feel comfortable and they stay in your ears securely; but if they're too large, they can cause fatigue quickly. If you're a runner who might run in windy conditions often, the FitActive Air has above average wind noise. But if you workout indoors or outdoors without windy conditions, you won't have that issue.

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 3.5
What's Hot: Lightweight, sweat resistant, easy to pair and connect, clear and loud audio.
What's Not: The tips are too large to wear comfortably for some people, wind noise is louder than average.
