Spyder Powershadow Battery Case and Dock for iPhone 6/6s Review
      #48813 - 11/12/15 08:55 PM

Competition in the iPhone battery case market is fierce. This usually results in case makers attempting to compete on price or features, but generally not both. Spyder's new Powershadow Battery Case/Dock has definitely staked-out the high end of the market, and it has brought its A-game.

With a 2750mAh battery, the Powershadow's capacity is 1.6 times greater than your iPhone 6s (that's 1.5 for iPhone 6 owners due to that phone's slightly larger internal battery). As with all battery cases, this number can be somewhat misleading because you're not using the case's battery to power your phone, you're using it to charge your iPhone's battery; and thanks to the laws of thermodynamics, some of that energy will be unavoidably lost in transfer in the form of heat. That being said, the Powershadow's capacity is definitely on the high end, and is enough to completely recharge a nearly dead iPhone. As previously noted in other reviews, you can improve this dramatically by not waiting until your phone is nearly dead to recharge it, and also by turning the battery off when your phone hits the 80% mark. I was able to recharge my phone from about 30% to 80% nearly twice using this case. While there are competing products on the market with similar capacities, the vast majority are larger and heavier. Since battery size vs. capacity is pretty much non-negotiable with current technology, Spyder's engineers clearly spent some quality time with the Powershadow in order to achieve this.

The Powershadow features an impressive list of bonus features as well. It's shockproof (drop-tested to 5ft), has a rubberized antimicrobial finish, and is water-resistant. It's important to note here that while the case itself is water-resistant, it provides very little moisture protection for your phone. Specifically, the charge and headphone ports are well-sealed with removable plugs, and the microphone and speakers are splash/rain protected. However, the home button is fully exposed, as is the mute switch.

The last feature I'm going to mention is a biggie, but it also requires a separate purchase. The Powershadow Case is compatible with the Powershadow Dock, which allows not only drop-in charging, but also syncing (the first of its kind). Simply plug the dock into a USB charge port, and the moment the metal contact points on the case connect with their counterpart spring-mounted pins in the dock, your phone and case will begin charging. For additional convenience, plug the dock into your computer and it will sync via the dock as well. The Powershadow Dock has the same pleasing rubbery coating as the case, has non-slip strips on the bottom to help keep it stationary, and is pleasantly weighted.

Summary

Available in black, titanium, champagne, and white, those looking for a full-featured battery case for the iPhone 6/6s, will be hard pressed to find one with more features than Spyder's Powershadow. If you're balking at the price, just remember that its large capacity, slim design, shock resistance, water resistance, drop-in charging/syncing, and antimicrobial coating don't come free, or even cheap. If you've got the cash, however, you won't find a better battery case than the Powershadow.

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 4.5
What's Hot: 2750 mAh Capacity. Thin for a battery case. Charges/syncs on contact with Powershadow Dock (sold separately). Drop-tested to 5ft. Dustproof. Water-resistant. Rubberized finish with antimicrobial coating.
What's Not: Case is water resistant, but it will in no way protect your phone from moisture. Great features also bring a higher price than most battery cases.
Price: Powershadow Case: $99.00; Powershadow Dock: $49.99
