iPad Case Review: Gumdrop Drop Tech Hideaway For iPad Mini 4 Review
      #49090 - 02/05/16 04:54 PM

The Drop Tech Hideaway Case by Gumdrop is a daily use case designed to protect your iPad Mini 4 from damage due to everyday mishaps. In case you're unfamiliar with Gumdrop's Drop Tech line of cases, they have a reputation for providing substantial drop protection due to their dual-layer construction.

A rigid inner ABS plastic skeleton provides stability for the iPad mini 4 case, and a thick outer layer of silicone cushions impact and makes it much easier to hold onto. To Gumdrop's credit, they didn't simply slap a "rugged" label onto their tablet. They drop-tested this line from a height of 6' onto solid concrete. Now that's peace of mind. While this case will at least double the thickness of your device, it will add very little to its width and length. I actually found the added thickness to improve the mobile experience with my Mini. For me, there's a limit to how slim and sleek a piece of technology can get before it starts to get unwieldy. If I'm going to carry this thing around with me (often outdoors), then I don't want to feel like I need to use it with my pinkies extended like I'm sipping tea. For a final touch, the Drop Tech Hideaway provides protection for all buttons and ports except for the home button (for Touch ID support), and includes an integrated screen protector. Because this product line is not marketed as offering moisture protection, I consider these covers and plugs to be a bonus. For those who may be disappointed to find that the Drop Tech Hideaway is not truly waterproof or even water resistant, keep in mind that protection from water comes with accessibility compromises that tend to make it unreasonable for an everyday case.

Although I've used previous iterations of Gumdrop's Drop Tech line, this is the first one I've tested from their Hideaway sub-line. These cases get their name from the integrated viewing stand that "hides away" when not in use. Easy to deploy with two angles (one for typing, one for viewing), I have found myself using it far more than I expected. Once you try it, you will likely find this to be a required feature on future iPad cases.

The Drop Tech Hideaway Case for iPad Mini is available in black/black, black/red, purple/blue, green/purple (plastic frame/silicone skin). Its distinctive tire tread texture looks masculine and aggressive in black and black/red, yet somehow still works for the more whimsical color combinations. There is definitely something for everybody here.

The Drop Tech Hideaway Case for iPad Mini provides a balanced combination of protection and usability. While it doesn't provide any real protection from water, it balances this by retaining true everyday functionality. Unless you're a lifeguard or a commercial fisherman, the basic moisture protection provided by the silicone flaps will likely be all you'll ever need. And, of course, the integrated viewing stand makes this one of the very best rugged, everyday cases available for the iPad Mini 4.

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 5
What's Hot: Thick rubber skin and rigid polycarbonate inner skeleton will likely protect your Mini from most everyday drops. Built-in screen protector. Protects against dust and everyday moisture. Integrated viewing stand. Available in 4 color combinations
What's Not: Like all rugged cases, it's bulky. Not everybody enjoys screen protectors.
Price: $69.95
