OWC USB-C Dock Review
      #49188 - 03/01/16 08:26 PM

The extremely portable 12" MacBook can do a lot of things for you on the road, including tasks for productivity, entertainment and communications. However there is one thing that the laptop sorely lacks: ports. What would you do if you want to connect the laptop to a USB mouse, a monitor, Ethernet and to charge the laptop at the same time? You get the USB-C Dock from OWC. With its 10 ports, the OWC USB-C aims to be the one and only dock you'll need for your MacBook to connect, charge and more. To match the MacBook's aesthetics, the OWC USB-C Dock comes in the same three colors of the MacBook, silver, gray and gold.

Video Review

The OWC USB-C Dock offers 4 USB 3 Type-A ports, 1 USB 3 Type-C port, SD card reader, HDMI with 4K support, gigabit Ethernet, combo Audio port and a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C Computer Link port that your MacBook plugs into. The OWC USB-C Dock comes with an 18" USB-C cable and an 80W charger. All USB ports, including the Type A and Type C ports, can charge your mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. The USB-C Computer Link port can charge your MacBook as well.

We tested the OWC USB-C Dock with the MacBook and found all ports work well. We also tested the dock with several PCs and smartphones that have USB-C type connectors, and you can watch Lisa Gade's video review of the dock to find out which ones worked with the dock and which ones didn't.

Now that you know the functions and limitations of the dock, be sure to download the Ethernet driver OWC offers if you run Mac OS X on your MacBook. Without this special driver, the Ethernet port will only work if the connected MacBook has already booted up and is not sleeping. You don't need this driver if you run Windows via Boot Camp.

If you have the 12" MacBook and are looking for a dock that can connect your laptop to displays, Ethernet, USB peripherals, SD cards and charge your laptop and mobile devices, the OWC USB-C Dock is currently the only one that offers this many ports and full connectivity options for the MacBook. If you're a Windows laptop owner, be sure to check out our video review before considering this dock. Measuring at 7.9 x 3.5 x 1.1 inches and weighing at 0.9 lbs., the dock is reasonably portable. The OWC USB-C Dock sells for $159.
