How to Reinstall Pocket PC OS?
      #5289 - 08/29/03 10:32 AM

Hello, I've been a very happy owner of an HP Ipaq H1940 for a month now. I've gotten used to almost all its functions and some tweaking but I want to know how to reinstall the OS just in case something happens to my ppc.

I've heard from other people that their ppc won't boot anymore after installing some 3rd party software so i'm very careful about installations of such programs.

Hope you could post info about it or if there already exists a info section about reinstalling ppc OS please post the link

Thank you very much

Anonymous is right. The OS is installed permanantly in ROM, and so erasing the PDA actually returns it to its original factory state. It doesn't work like a PC where erasing the hard drive means erasing the OS too.

Which Pocket PC do you have, once of the upgradeable ones, I assume.
The 1940 owner already has Pocket PC 2003, so they don't have to worry about this.

When you get the upgrade CD, it will include a utility that flashes (erases and rewrites) the ROM on your model of Pocket PC. It will first open a connection to the Pocket PC while in the cradle, then tell you the upgrade will take some time and not to interrupt the process or do anything while the upgrade is in progress.

Once it's done, it will have re-flashed the PPC with the new OS and thereafter if you hard reset your Pocket PC it will still have the new PPC 2003 OS. Only the flash utility can erase and write to the ROM area where the OS is stored. The hard reset doesn't touch it.

Thank you so much for your comments. It's my first PDA ever so I'm just learning how to go about it. Its a good thing that ppc's OS is permanent and all I need to do is hard reset to return it to its factory state

Many thanks to Anonymous and LisaG

PPC 2003 does run faster and has quite a few bug fixes.
Unless you have an iPAQ 5450 I'd say definitely. The only drawback with that iPAQ is the PPC2003 upgrade removes Nevo, the ever-popular AV remote app.

The procedure varies between brands and models, so it's best to look at your owner's manual to find out how to do a hard reset. With many, you press the power and reset button simultaneously, with some iPAQs you also need to hold down two of the front application buttons at the same time (requires a lot of coordination).

Hi all,

As you guys say that we can not erase the OS of a pocket PC, a hard reset could see like a hard disk formating ... But I still have the same problem even I made many hard reset .... my OS still not works,it always stops at Align Screen (this screen appears before the windows main menu screen... I really want to know where can I find the CD that could erase the hard drive and reinstall my Windows Mobile 2003 ... Could some one give me a hand please ! I already lost 2 days but could find any solution ... please help me !

thanks a lot.

Unfortunately there is no CD from which you could re-install the OS.
