I am currently using Tungten E, which has Palm OS 5.2.1, is it possible to upgrade the existing OS to the later versions which are announced by Palm Source ?
thanks and regards,

PalmOne hasn't yet released their plans about OS 6 upgrades for current OS 5 models. However the Zire 71 doesn't have upgradeable ROM so I don't think we'll be seeing an upgrade for that model.

hey lisa ,,,
In case of Tungsten E we can upgrade the OS, it has a flashable ROM. I have got the device checked with an individual who have technical know how of the devices.
by the way Palm Online Support has also confirmed that in case of Tengsten E the OS upgrade is possible. I guess after that we might be able to use Palm Bluetooth card or SD WiFi card ,,, but nothing is clear at the moment !
Regards.

That's strange as Palm has told us it doesn't have Flash ROM.
The fact you can't use the Palm SD Bluetooth card with the Tungstens has nothing to do with OS upgrades. Palm never wrote drivers for Palm OS 5.x models, that's the problem.
SanDisk is still working on the Palm drivers for Palm brand PDAs. Each model requires different drivers and that's what's taking so long.

hi again ,,,,
as far as the flashable rom issue is concerned , i am gonna send the the email which i have received from Palm online support.
i agree with what u have said in context of Blueetooth and WiFi drivers. I have read the review of the latest version Palm OS and it was stated that such OS supports Bluetooth and WiFi, my assumption was, if we r able to upgrade the OS of the version 5 devices to Cobalt , then I guess the driver issue will be ressolved.
I would really like to hear your comments on my assumption.
Thanks and regards.

The problem isn't that OS 5 doesn't support networking. There are several Palm OS 5.x devices that do have integrated BT and WiFi, for example and Sony's NX series could use Sony's WiFi CF card. Rather every device must have a driver- and that includes BT and WiFi cards (so do keyboards, GPS and etc). So OS 6/Cobalt won't make those cards work all by itself. It will however supposedly make it easier to write networking drivers.

Sony does not offer that upgrade, so there's no way to do it.

Sad but true, in the old days (several years ago) Palm used to offer OS major (e.g.: from Palm OS 3.5 to 4.0) upgrades for free or for a small charge. They've stopped doing that. Sony has never offered OS upgrades and I can't imagine them starting to do so now that they've left the US PDA market. So the answer you don't want to hear is that there are no upgrades for either the Tungsten C or TG50. The consolation is that both are already running Palm OS 5, which is the latest used on any production Palm OS PDA. No devices with OS 6 have been released, though that OS became available to manufacturers in January 2004.

Jayant, Sony doesn't make upgrades to OS 5 or 6 for any Clies. The OS they ship with is the only one you can use. A shame, I know.

No OS 4 device can be upgraded to OS 5. OS 5 only runs on ARM-based processors. The problem is the underlying hardware, not anyone's upgrade policy.
Sony hasn't offered an OS upgrade since the N710 conversion, and there's no reason to expect this to change now that Sony has left the US and European markets.
Palm has announced no OS upgrades to any recent device. OS 6.0 requires 16 MB Flash, so only the TE, T3, and T5 have the hardware to load it. All these devices have the horsepower to run OS 6, but PalmOne hasn't made their intentions known on this issue.
You can ascertain if an upgrade is available for your OS 3.x or 4.x device by going to the the manufacturer's support website and looking for the support files for your device. If you have a Sony, don't waste your time.

There is no OS 5 upgrade for that model. OS 5 requires an ARM family processor and your model had the older Motorola Dragonball processor.

Since Sony has abandoned the US and European markets, it seems highly unlikely.
