It's not a crazy idea, but most Pocket PCs don't support it. You'd need a Pocket PC with USB host capability (the e805 has it but not the e405). The e405, like most current Pocket PCs, can't act as a "host" for USB peripherals the way your PC can (the USB hardware must support host, it's not a software issue).

Software and firmware aren't the issue, the e405 doesn't have the needed hardware. It's probably cheaper to buy a 512 meg SD card then an e805 that you don't need plus the USB host cable ($20 but hard to find right now) to expand your storage.

Whoops- right you are, I just checked Toshiba's site and the USB host cable (for ever on backorder) is listed for both devices.

Actually you cannot use an iPod with any PPC as it does not work with any of the available USB drivers.

Not a crazy idea at all. The guy that wrote the driver for the ipaq storage brick that works great under pc2002 has written another driver for pc2003 but it's not free anymore. The cost is like $20.00 (not bad really and it has much expanded support) I can't tell you specifically that it'll work with your ipod but it works with my pocket xdrive externally powered notebook hard drive enclosure and it also works with my archos multimedia jukebox 20 and I've seen posts in newsgroups from folks that said some of the other archos players with hard drives also worked with this driver. If you don't have to load a driver on your pc when you hook up the IPOD then it should work.
Driver can be purchased at www.anypakusa.com
