You CAN reformat the hard drive, you need to fdisk it first to remove the partitions, just make sure you make backups first. The guy I talked to said if I sent it in, they would restore the original operating system when they repaired it, I told him upfront I reformatted because windows wouldn't boot, I turned off the wrong thing in msconfig, so I didn't have a choice. He never said Anything about the warranty being voided, they're having alot of heat issues with this unit,and there's a registry patch to protect the hd backup,so I'm thinking alot of people have deleted the backup! Just make sure you reformat the drive to blank it out before sending it in for repairs.
