PSP News - Mastiff To Release Gurumin in the US
      01/10/07 03:13 AM

Mastiff has picked up the US rights to the quirky Japanese action-RPG "Gurumin" and plans a February release for the title. The game's developers have designated the game a "drilling action-RPG" and they aren't kidding when they say that either. The game is developed by legendary rpg developers Falcom and despite Falcom normally sticking with traditional-style RPGs, Gurumin proves that even they can be a little experimental at times and the result is one of the most original and refreshing action-RPGs released in years. Gurumin has a lot of personality to it and that's probably what makes it so much fun to play.

I picked up the import version of Gurumin game several months ago and I loved it. The game feels like a cross between a very creative 3-D platformer and a standard rpg. While you'll spend a lot of time running, jumping, and drilling, you're also required to speak to many people in the game and carry out various tasks in order to proceed further into the game. You'll meet a very odd bunch of characters along the way, each with their own distinctive over-the-top personality.

I was hoping a US publisher would bring this game stateside as it's a real treat to play and reminds me a lot of PoPoLoCrois in the way the game just brims with personality. Judging from the few hours I've played of the import version, players can expect a fairly long quest and one that requires you to learn a lot of special moves in order to function in the game's later levels. As I said above, the game features a lot of pinpoint platforming challenges to go along with its rpg overtones so the game will likely appeal to a broad range of gamers. Another strong point of the game is the boss fights. Not only are the bosses some of the craziest bosses you'll ever see in a game, they're also a lot of fun to fight with some having very tricky patterns to them.

The soundtrack in the game is also extremely well done. It's very reminiscent of the Klonoa soundtracks and it has some very melodic moments along with some nice up-tempo tracks for times when the action heats up. The voice acting is really well executed in the Japanese version and I'm anxious to see how it turns out in the US release. We'll have more on the game when it's released and until then you can check out the teaser and screenshots below.

Gurumin immerses gamers in a vivid fantasy world filled with a colorful cast of characters. Real-time combat and stunning 3D graphics combine with a spirited soundtrack to make Gurumin a fast-paced, immersive, magical adventure.

Gurumin stars a strong-willed girl named Parin, who is sent to live with her grandfather in a small mining town while her parents are off excavating an ancient ruin. With no other children living in this town, Parin is surprised one day to encounter a young girl being tormented by a stray dog. After Parin drives off the mongrel, she is shocked to discover the young girl is actually a monster, and like all monsters, invisible to adults. Parin is soon invited to pass through a crack in the wall behind her home and enter Monster Village. Parin has just started making monster friends when evil spirits, known as the Phantoms, invade the village and monsternap most of the inhabitants. Parin soon learns of the Legendary Drill, a weapon hidden underneath the village and, in the right hands, powerful enough to destroy the Phantoms. Thus begins Parin?s quest to reclaim the Legendary Drill and set the world right.
