Look ma, no spindles! Dell will offer their Latitude D420 ultra-mobile and D620 ATG semi-rugged notebooks with a 1.8" 32 gig solid state drive (flash memory) made by SanDisk. The option will cost $549 and is available today in the Americas. Dell says it will soon be available in Europe and Asia as well.
Dell claims the new drives can also increase system performance by up to 23 percent and decreases boot time by up to 34 percent compared to traditional HDDs available with the Latitude D420 and D620 ATG. In addition, the drive has an operating shock tolerance of up to 1,300 Gs (twice that of conventional hard drives) and have a significantly lower failure rate. Now if only they were available in 120 gig capacity like good old fashioned hard drives .
