AT&T Posts Pre-Purchase Understandings for iPhone
      06/27/07 01:04 PM

OK, yes that's a strange document title-- sounds like something the lawyers drew up and the PR folks didn't put their ever-friendly spin on. But AT and T (we have to write that out because RSS readers hate ampersands) has posted a document called "Pre-purchase understandings" on their iPhone web page. This PDF, along with their iPhone FAQ state:

1. It's only on AT&T (duh).

2. You'll activate the phone using iTunes at home. If you're a new customer and thus have to go through the customary credit check but don't wish to send your social security number over the Net, reps at AT&T corporate stores can pre-approve you and give you the approval code number to enter during the iTunes activation process. Of course when the reps approve you, it goes over the Net on their computer anyhow.

3. You will have to sign a 2 year agreement. If you're an existing customer you'll have to renew your contract. Contracts aren't additive, so that means you'll have 2 years to go on the contract, not 2 years plus whatever was left on your original contract. All current customers in good standing are eligible, you don't have to be up for contract renewal.

4. You will have to add the iPhone data plan, which is a fairly reasonable $20/month and includes 200 SMS (the iPhone doesn't do MMS, so of course no mention of that).

5. New customers will choose from a variety of iPhone plans, mentioned in a prior post. Existing customers can keep their existing calling plan but must add the iPhone data plan (which may require a change from whatever data plan you had before).

6. This is unfortunate but you won't be able to take advantage of AT&T's usual 14 day return policy where you can return the phone complete and in working order for a full refund. With the iPhone there will be a 10% restocking fee! No idea if California will handle this differently since they have more consumer friendly laws when it comes to cell phone returns.

7. Available only to consumer accounts.

** Not mentioned in this document, but covered elsehwere: Yes the iPhone does use a SIM like any other GSM phone and the SIM card tray is on the top edge.

The document is located here: http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/specials/iPhone.jsp . There's a link to it on the right hand side of the page.

If you're trying to figure out which stores will have the iPhone, AT&T has put up a page here: http://www.wireless.att.com/find-a-store/iphone/
