iPhone Game Review: Zombie Wonderland Reviewed by Spaztrigger
The last place you would expect a zombie infestation is in Niceville, but life isn't always fair and the nice folks in Niceville are suffering from a pesky zombie infestation. Now our protagonist, Chuck, must stop it before Niceville is over-run by zombies. With 2 gameplay modes and 4 different types of zombies, killing has never been this much fun!
If you think this is like in Zombieland where you can just be trigger happy and make a mess anywhere you kill zombies, you are half wrong. Sure you get a shotgun with infinite ammo and you are free to pop any zombie head in your way, but making a mess is not an option with the folks in Niceville. You've got to mop up after the head popping. Really, you get a mop to clean zombie guts after a gunfight and wooden planks to board up the windows. How domestic! There are gameplay modes: Story and Survival. In story mode, you must defend the area you?re in until the time runs out. You have four locations (house, bar, cemetery and garage) and five stages in each location. You earn high scores by killing as many zombies as you can. In survival mode, you visit these locations again, only this time around, the zombies will get you. The question is how long can you last? The longer you survive the high scores you earn.
There are four types of zombies in Zombie Wonderland and they provide sufficient amount of entertainment. The Greenies are normal zombies, the grannies shatter windows, the Flammies bring fire on their body to your windows and the blue Meanies can shatter more than one mirror with one punch, true to their name. As they swarm toward you, you must choose carefully which zombies you terminate first. To eliminate the onslaught of different zombies, you can upgrade your weapons. You can borrow Aunt Lilly?s box of Super Slug bullets and mount a machine gun sentry on the windows sill. Tidying up can get upgrade as well: trade in your mop and bucket for Gutvac super vacuum that sucks up guts and bloodstains. The game could use more weapons though, a fire distinguisher for the Flammies maybe.
Thanks to Chillingo?s own score keeping system, Crystal, you can compete on the global online leader board.
The 3D graphics in Zombie Wonderland look impressive: the carton style environment looks bright and sharp. The game graphics are modeled after Boxhead-style game design: characters have box-shaped heads. Different zombie types all have their own looks and the top down view gameplay and animate move smoothly.
The controls are fairly simple. To move around you tap at a window or zombie. Then Chuck will automatically move toward the window and shoot. If a zombie comes inside of the house then you must kill it and clean its gut using the mop icon. If you want to apply wooden planks then you must go to a window and repeatedly tap the hammer button. The controls work very smoothly without any glitch.
If you play zombie games like Zombieville then you know that it has a zombie like music. Which consist of being dark and gloomy and every zombie game should incorporate this. Zombie wonderland has that, but it adds a little more. It incorporates sound bites into the BGM, sound bites like spring noise and such, which shows off the talent of the sound developers. What?s even more amusing is that, like in Minigore, Chuck gets his own voice dubbing. Now he says funny little things such as "Oh No, Grannies!" or "No brains for you!" which will crack you up while cutting zombies in halves. You can play your own music but it requires sometime. First you must turn on the game, then to the audio option and turn the BGM to zero. Now lock your screen then tap the home button 2 times, then press the play button and play your own iPod music. Really why bother if it takes this much effort!
If you like zombies killing this game is a perfect match for you. The gameplay is great, sounds are nicely done, and the graphics kick arse. After you are done with story mode, survival mode seems very appealing. We only wish there were more weapon selection, like grenade launchers, shotgun upgrades and more. Remember the price $1 is only an INTRODUCTORY price. So get it now while the deal is running!
