iPhone Game Review: Super QuickHook
Reviewed by Dave Koo

The sequel to Hook Champ, QuickHook brings in a new protagonist and endless amount of gameplay. Featuring Jakob with his quest to gain fame just like Jake, the star of Hook Champ, the game takes through Castlevania like dungeons and temps you with secrets, money and very interesting enemies. What's not to like?

Gameplay

The objective of QuickHook is to beat the level using your grappling hook and on the way you have to find secrets and coins. In order to get a higher score you must either clear the level quickly, getting as many coins as you can, or find the secrets. The secrets in a level are pretty well hidden and finding them can prove difficult. In fact they are so well hidden that you have to go under lava just to reach one. There are about 13 levels in QuickHook each filled with their own secrets.

There are 2 game modes in QuickHook. One is story mode and the other is endless mode, but the set up is a little different from other game. The first level tells the story and it?s where you acquire your trusty grapple hook. Then it?s mad dash of endless play, chased by an avalanche. You can play for as long as you can stay alive, thank god there are no enemies to stop you, and not fall.

In both of the modes there is something called the Developer's score. In every level, QuickHook will tell you the score that the developer got in that level, which usually is pretty high. If you make to it to the end of the level, you get money; but if you beat the developers score for that level, you get more money. What do you do with all the money, you ask? You buy stuff from the shop and enhance your chances of surviving future levels. You can buy characters, upgrades, new equipment, and new grappling hook. Some items in the shop can't be bought until you fulfill a certain requirement. For example to get one of the characters, you must beat one of the developers score.

The game tracks your score and has OpenFeint global score support.

Graphics & Sound

Old school gamers who adore Castlevania type of games will enjoy the 16-bit graphics in Super QuickHook. In fact, it probably has one of the best 16-graphics in an iPhone game. Each level looks completely different and level design serves the gameplay very well.

The controls are easy to use: you have three buttons, one is to move left and the other is to move right. The third button is the rocket boot button. You tap the boot icon and you do a super jump. Remember this game is about swinging and in order to use the grappling hook you tap at a rock and Jakob does the rest. The control works perfectly smooth with no glitches.

There are both background music and sound FX in Super QuickHook. The BGM also qualifies as one of the more accomplished packages. Each level has its own tracks that fit well with the gameplay mood and keep you company as you make the tough jumps or hard swings. Sound FX is also excellent and there re plenty of them, like sliding sound, thumps, etc. The audio never gets boring or repetitive, but the game offers an option to play your own iPod music.

Conclusion

Super QuickHook offers tons of replay and in the next update you get more levels! Both graphics and music are top notch. For $2.99 this game is what people call a steal!
