iPhone Game Review: Earth Defender
Reviewed by SpaZtrigger

Oh No! Aliens are invading and it's up to you to defend Earth by firing on attacking aliens and generate apocalyptic chain reactions through targeted bombardments!

As they always say, the best is a good offense.

Gameplay

Earth Defender might look like a shoot 'em up game like but it actually has avery different gameplay. In shoot 'em up games, you control a spaceship in order to attack; but in Earth Defender you have your finger, a couple of bombs, 5 nukes, and no space ship. You must launch bombs that will set off a chain reaction when they all blow up, taking nearby enemies with them. The more aliens you kill with a chain reaction, the higher your score gets. Your commander gives you a brief run down of the controls and sets you out on your first mission. A careless gamer might think that the 1st level is going to be a piece of cake, he'd be wrong. Earth Defender offers 6 levels of intense action with 14 different types of enemy and levels bosses with a gigantic end game boss thrown in for a good measure. You are consistently bombarded with enemy droids, hunters and bombers. The hunters are immune to bombs, you can only kill them by tapping on them to fire your laser. The Bombers are even harder to kill: you must tap and hold your finger on the enemy units in order to destroy them. Then there are the bosses that need even more bombing, tapping and holding.

To help you with defending Earth and kill the aliens, the game offers power ups. You obtain a new power up for each level and upgrade your bombs, making alien annihilation possible. For the tough boss fights, we highly recommend that you reserve at least one of your nukes. Sadly Earth Defender doesn?t offer any upgrade that might help you strengthen your defense, like shields.

Earth Defender has good replay value thanks to 20 achievements and a global score board via OpenFeint. The game also has integration in Facebook and Twitter, which means you can share your glory with friends.

Graphics

Earth Defender positively radiant 3D graphics that outshine many iOS 3D games. The environment looks stunning with detailed animated backgrounds and elaborate visual effects. Enemy design look like 3D Galaga and levels look very realistic.

Controls are easy: you tap to explode bombs and you drag or slide your finger across the screen in order to defeat certain enemies. The simple controls help the game flow perfectly. There are control glitches on iOS 4 devices.

Sound

Like the visuals, Earth Defender serves up a full orchestral soundtrack that help create the right mood for the frantic, non-stop action. The dramatic tones feel right at home when Earth?s fate is in jeopardy and you are the only one who can save it. There is also a fair amount of Sound FX in Earth Defender. When a bomb explodes you hear an explosion and there are sounds like laser beams and aliens being destroyed. The sound FX is realistic and helps make the gameplay more immersive.

Conclusion

Shoot ?em Up players don?t get discouraged by Earth Defender, though it?s not a shoot ?em up game, it has stunning visuals, awesome music and countless enemies with non-stop actions. Even if it doesn?t have a space ship, it deserves a look. The tap, drag and shoot controls are very well designed, matching the combos to enemy levels. Six levels don?t sound very long, but the intense fighting gives the game an epic feel; plus 20 achievements and a global score board to go back for. It?s a good buy for $0.99!
