Verizon Talks up 4G LTE, Show 4G Galaxy Tab and HTC Thunderbolt
      01/06/11 09:50 PM

Are you sensing a theme here at CES? The major carriers are talking up their flavors of 4G, with LTE being Verizon's darling. Verizon continues to expand their 4G network, and we have to say they're off to an aggressive start (their LG 4G USB modem saved our behinds here at CES when the WiFi networks buckled and AT&T's network fell flat (our iPhone 4 turned into a paperweight). That's what 200,000 folks cramming Las Vegas will do to a network.

Next Verizon's execs rolled out 10 4G devices, 4 being smartphones and the rest being 4G USB modems, an HP Pavilion notebook with embedded 4G and tablets. Yum. These include the Motorola Bionic smartphone and the Motorola Xoom. Some devices will be here a early as March, according to Verizon.

The head of Skype took the stage to talk about their partnership with Verizon that will bring Skype Mobile to all Verizon 4G phones. Skype Mobile on Verizon Wireless 4G allows for voice and video calling. And we hear that Skype is buying Qik too.

Next Peter Chou, head of HTC took the stage to show off the HTC Thunderbolt, Verizon's first 4G smartphone. This Android superphone features a huge 4.3" display, 4G LTE, Skype Mobile, an 8P camera and fast CPU.

EA Mobile's up next to show off what they've developed to take advantage of the fast network. There's Rock Band Mobile multiplayer-- you're playing guitar on your Thunderbolt while you're buddies are playing drums and bass on their phones.

Last to the stage, JK Skin, president of Samsung took the stage to announce 3 4G devices for Verizon.

1) 4G Galaxy Tab. Updated with Samsung's new 1.2GHz CPU. Alas, running Froyo Android OS 2.2 rather than Gingerbread 3.0.

2) Samsung 4G LTE Android smartphone with a Super AMOLED Plus display (sharper, brighter and better outdoors). It has an 8MP main camera, 1.3MP front camera and a fast second gen Samsung CPU. And again, like the Tab 2, the phone is running Froyo, not Gingerbread.

3) Samsung 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot that can serve a connection to 5 clients at once.
