iPhone Game Review: N.O.V.A. 2
Reviewed by JJ Robbins

N.O.V.A. 2 is a sequel to Gameloft's popular N.O.V.A. 3D actions shooter game. With graphics more tuned up for the retina display, a more intelligent AI and new enemies and new multiplayer mode, the N.O.V.A. lovers will fall instantly in love with this sequel.

N.O.V.A. 2 starts with Kal being recalled to active duty. The mission is to protect the human alliance of course, but the main focus of the game is killing a variety of enemies with the story taking a backseat. And that's where the fun comes in: whether it's corrupted soldiers, aliens, or robots, almost everything in N.O.V.A. 2 needs to meet its maker. There are big set pieces strung together by small skirmishes and corridor shootouts that turn out to be very intents. After some frantic fighting, there is always a big moment to look forward to in N.O.V.A. 2, but then there is more non-stop action waiting for you around the next corner.

Enemy AI in N.O.V.A. 2 is very smart for a mobile game with high intelligence and fast action timing. They take cover and have become harder to kill than in the first game. They also seem to hit you more often. So veterans of N.O.V.A. gameplay won?t just walk everything over in N.O.V.A. 2, they have to work for their money. The AI also seems to have some team work intelligence built-in, for example, some times you will see two mechs enemies; one will come up and draw your fire with the other flak you.

N.O.V.A. 2 also includes vehicles. The bike is a neat addition, and so are the mechs. There are big bosses that you must fight at times, and they are tough to kill which makes the game more enjoyable for veteran players. You may have to come back a few times to try and finish the job. Novice players might not enjoy this as much.

But where N.O.V.A. 2 really shines is the multiplayer mode. They have come a very long way from the first game. N.O.V.A. 2 has up to ten players in a match and ten maps to play on. There are many playing modes also, such as capture the flag, freeze tag, battle, team battle, and one shot one kill. I like the last one the best because you earn XP quickly. Regardless your preference, the multiplayer mode provides endless gameplay as you get different players and different maps each time, so you have different experience each time you play. Awesome! The Maps in the multiplayer mode are outstanding, like Space and Sky City which are personal favorites. The game is set up to encourage you to participate in multiplayer fights as you gain XP, level up and unlock weapons and perks. Among all the multiplayer team shooter out there, N.O.V.A. 2 is the one to beat.

Graphics & Sound

N.O.V.A. 2 looks great on retina display. The colors go well with the different terrain, and designs of different worlds, enemy units and terrain have console game level of quality. The weapons and vehicles look sharp and special effects like explosions, look also sharp. Overall the graphics are done very well.

The sounds fit the game nicely. The sounds vary from what blows up it what you shoot. There is a little bit of music going on in the menu screen, and also in gameplay. The plasma guns have a retro sounds and explosions from grenades and mines sound great.

Fans of the first N.O.V.A. game will no doubt want to play N.O.V.A. 2 as the game has more depth with better tuned AI and an awesome multiplayer mode. The controls work very well and replay value is super high thanks to the multiplayer mode. Even if you?ve not played the first game, but are a fan of 3D FPS games you should definitely get N.O.V.A. 2.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: - 5 - look great newer devices and older ones to.
Sound: - 5 - All the sounds fit the game and really doesn't get repetitive.
Controls: - 4.5 - The virtual stick like most games is fun, great with gyro but it looks a little crowed on the screen.
Gameplay: - 5 - Gameplay is great and has a great replay value to this game.

Playing Hints and Tips:

During matches on multiplayer don't be afraid to die, be aggressive.
