iPhone 4 Case Review: PowerSkin for iPhone 4

What's Hot: Durable case, made with recycled material, good battery power and on/off control.

What's Not: It doesn't have anything to protect the screen.

The first thing you'd want for your iPhone 4 is a case and the second thing is usually an extra external battery. The PowerSkin for iPhone 4 silicone case with built-in battery kills two birds with one stone. The PowerSkin for iPhone 4 is a battery pack wrapped in a non-slippery silicone rubber skin. The battery has 2000mAh in capacity and can easily double your iPhone 4's runtime.

Design

The PowerSkin for iPhone 4 has a very nice design. The battery is molded flat so that it matches the iPhone 4's shape, no back hump here. The battery part of the PowerSkin covers the back of the iPhone 4, and it?s hard and protective. The built-in battery takes about half of the depth of the case, leaving the other half for your iPhone 4. The case surrounding your iPhone 4 is made with softer but thick silicone rubber from recycled material. This allows you to put the phone in the case easily: plug the 30-pin connector to the battery first, then lift the edges of the silicone case to cover the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4 sits in the PowerSkin comfortably on the battery platform, and it looks nice. The PowerSkin for iPhone 4 adds minimal thickness and length at 5.1 x 2.5 x 0.77 inches and weighs 0.18 lbs. The PowerSkin comes only in black.

Features

The PowerSkin for iPhone 4 is a very functional case. It has cutouts for the rear camera and flash, the audio jack and mic on top and the silence button on the side of the phone. The silence button cutout should accommodate both the AT&T and the Verizon version of the iPhone 4. The power button and volume buttons are covered but very easy to use while under the cover. The 30-pin connector on the iPhone 4 connects to the built-in battery; luckily the PowerSkin case has a through charge and sync port and come with an USB/MicroUSB cable for you to charge the phone/battery pack and sync your device.

The 2000mAh battery pack can easily give your iPhone 4 a full cycle of charge and the PowerSkin charges the phone at a similar rate to an AC charger, usually within 1 hour from 1% to 100% for the iPhone 4?s battery. The battery outputs an efficient 5V, 1A power and it has built-in smart battery technology that provides safe charging features. When you charge the battery pack while the iPhone 4 is in the case, it will charge iPhone 4?s internal battery first. The case has 4 LED lights that indicate the amount of power left in the battery pack, and a very useful on/off button to turn charging off when you don?t want your iPhone 4 charged. Press the on/off button quickly to check the battery power left, press and hold it to turn the battery charging off. When you charge the battery pack, only one LED flashes as opposed to flashing more lights as the charge getting full. So you need to press the on/off button to check the charging level.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a case with rechargeable battery to double the runtime of your phone, 2000mAh capacity battery is the ideal option. The PowerSkin for iPhone 4 battery case can give you a full charge and with the durable silicone rubber material it can certain absorb some shock and bumps in your bag or backpack. The battery charges fast and you can sync your iPhone 4 while it?s in the PowerSkin case. There isn?t anything to protect the screen though, so you might want to get a protector when using the PowerSkin. In addition to the iPhone 4, there are PowerSkin battery cases for many popular Android and BlackBerry phones, many cheaper than the iPhone 4 version. So be sure to check their web site for the full list of supported devices.
