Symantec Reporting Android Malware Targeting Dog Wars Users

No malware is good, but this one is creative. Symantec reported they have identified a malware as Android.Dogowar in which case digital vigilantes leveraged Android.Walkinwat to get their message out about using pirated software. In what might indicate an emerging trend, individual(s) protesting the controversial "Dog Wars", a dogfighting app for Android have now also taken their outcry digitally by Trojanizing a version of that app and releasing it on various third-party download sites. Here is more on the story:
Designated Android.Dogowar by Symantec, the compromised app seeks to embarrass those who think they have downloaded the legitimate version of the app. Using software packages and services aptly named "Dogbite" and "Rabies," it first sends out the following text message to everyone on the contact lists of infected devices: ?I take pleasure in hurting small animals, just thought you should know that.? The threat then goes one step farther by attempting to register compromised devices for a text message alert service operated by PETA.
You can see that the malware version looks very similar to the real app with "BETA" switched to "PETA":
