iPhone Camera Lens Review: Digital King Fish-Eye Lens and Wide/Macro Lens for iPhone 4

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 3

What's Hot: Lenses are of good quality. The macro lens is the most useful of the three, allowing extreme close-ups.

What's Not: Lens doesn't work with most cases so you'll have to liberate your phone before you attach it. The Fish-Eye Lens is one-trick pony making the $50 price difficult to justify unless you absolutely need that fish-eye effect. The Wide-Angle Lens introduces some slight blurring near the horizontal edges. Lenses attach magnetically so you won?t be able to leave them on your phone between photos unless you're very careful with them.

Overview

The lenses adhere to the back of your iPhone magnetically (once you attach the included adhesive-backed magnetic ring to your device) and produces a true 180? fish-eye effect, or allow wide angle/macro photos, depending on which one you are using.

Size and Fit

Once you have attached the included adhesive metal ring to your phone (extras are provided), these lenses adhere magnetically to your iPhone 4. Great care must be taken, however, to install the adhesive ring correctly. A sloppy or botched installation may block the iPhone?s camera lens or flash, forcing you to peel it off and start over. Fortunately, the adhesive that Digital King uses leaves no residue on your iPhone once removed, although it doesn?t adhere as well the second time around, compelling you to use a new one if you install it incorrectly and need to start over.

Features and Quality

The lenses are made of glass and aluminum, and have a very substantial feel to them. They come with soft drawstring pouches and lens caps to protect your investment. All you need to do is open the pouch, pop off the lens cap, remove your iPhone from its case, attach the lens, and you?re ready to go. This felt like a lot of work to me, however, if you?re ok with it, you?re going to be rewarded with some effects that you just can?t do with the iPhone?s stock lens. Unfortunately, I found them more trouble than they were worth and just didn?t use them nearly as often as I thought I would.

The fish-eye lens produces a true 180? fish-eye effect, which I found only minimally useful. However, if you need this effect you need it, and aren?t going to find another option short of applying effects with software, which may give the fish-eye effect, but won?t grab the wide field of view that this lens does.

The wide angle lens did increase the size of my photos horizontally; however I noticed some slight blurring of features near the edges that I simply couldn?t prevent, no matter how many times I unattached/reattached the lens. The macro lens is accessed by unscrewing it from the wide angle lens and was by far the most useful of the three as it allowed me to get much closer to objects than I could with the iPhone?s stock lens.

Here are some of the sample photos taken with the lenses under various effects.

Summary

The 180? fish-eye lens and the wide angle/macro lens are high quality glass lenses that you can use with your iPhone 4. You may find their limited features and installation/uninstallation a bit off-putting as I did; however, if you need these photo effects, you?re not going to find them anywhere else.

Price: Fish-Eye $59.99, Wide Angle/Macro $49.99
