iPad Case Review: The Joy Factory BubbleShield Pro for Tablets

What's Hot: IPX7 Certified (Waterproof for 30 min., within 1 meter). Tablet is fully functional while enclosed. Combination of roll-up enclosure and Velcro makes for a secure watertight seal.

What's Not: Case material feels thin and flimsy compared to competing products.

Overview

The BubbleShield Pro is a waterproof bag for your tablet device. It can withstand submersion for up to 30 minutes in water up to 1 meter deep.

Size and Fit

The BubbleShield Pro is designed to accommodate a variety of different tablet computers and e-readers, and as such has a very generic, loose fit. Because it is more of a bag than a case, this is not entirely unexpected.

Features and Quality

The BubbleShield Pro is a true waterproof bag that will protect your tablet/e-reader from water, even when fully immersed. The IPX7 Certification specifically means that it will keep your device dry for up to 30 minutes in up to 1 meter of water. Hopefully, real world usage will yield better protection as the most likely scenario is one where your device takes a swim in the pool/river/lake and most of those are deeper than 1 meter.

The folks at The Joy Factory have gone to great lengths to design a case that keeps the water out. After playing with it for a bit, I can confidently say that if this case leaks, it's due to some sort of hull breach because nothing is getting through that seal. First, you roll it up tight, then hold it together with very aggressive Velcro. When I tested it, not a drop of water sneaked in, even over the course of several hours. I did, however, find the case material disappointingly thin compared to competing products. It may be just as durable, it just didn't feel like it.

My iPad 2 was fully useable while in the BubbleShield Pro, including both cameras.

Style

Being constructed of grey, black, and clear materials, it's not big on style. It's functional, however, and with a case that is designed for a single purpose, I can forgive them for a lapse in style.

Summary

As long as it doesn't sustain any damage, this case will keep your tablet/e-reader bone dry, even when fully submerged (within limits). While it's a solid entrant into the dry bag market for tablets, it feels a bit less durable than some competing products so do your homework before you buy.
