iPhone Game Review: Akane The Kunoichi Review

Reviewed by ninjackid

Akane The Kunoichi was originally released for Xbox Live Indie, how well does this retro-inspired platformer play on iOS?

Gameplay

In this game you play Akane, a Kunoichi ninja who secretly has a crush on her master ninja. When suddenly her love is captured by evil ninjas, you have to rush after them against all odds to save him! Not much of an original story, right? But thankfully the classic retro platforming feel of the gameplay allows you to overlook the simple story.

This game features 15 levels across 5 different environments, 5 of the levels being boss levels. Gameplay is essentially like every other platformer you've played, but fun enough to keep your attention. Throughout the levels you'll be leaping across platforms, wall-jumping, shooting baddies with your magic attack and your ninja darts. In each level there are three kimonos for you to find, increasing the replay value a bit. The levels are well designed. They aren't particularly huge per se, but they're good sized and do have a sense of exploration.

Controls are as simple as a d-pad on the bottom left of the screen, and buttons to jump, shoot and activate your special magic attack. While it's hard to perfectly nail platformer controls on a touch screen, the controls in this game are very solid and as good as you're going to get on a glass screen.

Graphics and Sound

The graphics are definitely done well, reminiscent of old 16-bit retro games, and are a welcome treat to the retro fan.

The music and sound effects are good enough, but aren't really much to write home about. They do get the job done, however, and aren't terrible by far.

Conclusion

Akane The Kunoichi isn't the best platformer on the App Store, but it is definitely a fun game, and highly recommended to fans of retro platformers. Easily a solid addition to any gamer's collection.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: -4- Great retro pixel graphics.
Sound: -3.5- Music and sound effects are good enough.
Controls: -4- Responsive, tight controls, great considering you're playing on a glass touch screen.
Gameplay: -4- Classic retro platforming at it's finest! Must have for any platformer fan!

Playing Hints and Tips:

Be sure to check every nook and cranny for the three Kimonos in each level!
