AT&T Android Smartphone Top 4 Comparison: HTC One X, Galaxy S III, Xperia Ion and Atrix HD

Four-way Smackdown: HTC One X, Motorola Atrix HD, Samsung Galaxy S III and Sony Xperia Ion

It's the best of times and the worst of times if you're an ATT customer. You get four really excellent higher end Android smartphones to choose from. But the choice isn't easy! Two of our phones in this comparison sell for $199 with contract (One X and GS III), while the other two are just $99 with contract. Keep in mind that if you're buying them full retail, there's still a $100 difference, but that means less when you're talking $449 vs. $549.

You've no doubt read a lot about the HTC One X by now, and likewise the Samsung Galaxy S III has buckets of coverage from us and everyone else. And we have an HTC One X vs. Samsung Galaxy S III on AT&T comparison smackdown for those who are considering just those two.

The Motorola Atrix HD is the new kid on the block, and it brings the Droid RAZR design to AT&T with updated specs like a full 720p display, Android 4.0.4 ICS and the same Qualcomm S4 1.5GHz CPU used in the One X and GS III. Really, there's little reason why this guy costs half the price of the HTC and Samsung smartphones: it has all the goods.

The Sony Xperia Ion wins for materials, design and camera. It's sleek and minimalist with a metal back and a quality feel. The 12 megapixel camera with Sony's Exmor sensor indeed takes the best photos of the lot. It's Achilles' heel? It's still running Android 2.3 Gingerbread on a 1.5GH Qualcomm S3 CPU that was hot last fall but has been eclipsed by the S4 Krait. At least the phone will get ICS, though we don't have a firm date yet.

In our smackdown we cover the salient differences like display technology and quality, speed, call quality, data (LTE), battery life (and whether it's replaceable) and design. One point I forgot to mention in the video is expandable storage: the HTC One X is the only one in this group that lacks a micro SD card and that's a sore point.

Here's our AT&T Android Smartphone Comparison Smackdown with the HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S III, Motorola Atrix HD and Sony Xperia Ion:
