Generally, for new issue models, something with a pretty fast CPU and a decent dedicated GPU run $1,000 and up. If you go for the last gen model (with computers that might only be a 4 month old model!) you can save $100 to $200 off that price.
One of the most affordable yet really powerful machines at a the $1,000 mark is the Lenovo IdeaPad Y580. Not super thin or pretty but it has a lot of bang for the buck.
