iPad Game Review: King Cashing 2 (Universal) Review
Reviewed by Tom Slayton
King Cashing 2 is an RPG with a cleverly implemented slot machine mechanic and a great comic book vibe. The combination of chance and strategy makes for a great gaming experience with that "just one more battle" quality.
King Cashing 2 opens with a beautifully drawn comic to tell the backstory. To be honest, I never quite understood the backstory, but my initial confusion as to why I was playing an undead king fighting dudes in business suits didn't bother me for too long. The game is just too much fun, and sometimes you just have to go with it. At its core, King Cashing 2 is a well-crafted role-playing game in five chapters, with all the requisite bells and whistles. 150+ weapons, each with three different qualities, and some with special abilities; 86 different enemies with unique attacks, abilities, and defenses; and 7 zombie/hero classes for you level, train, equip, and grow fond of.
As full-featured as this sounds, without its unique combat mechanic, King Cashing 2 would likely be relegated to the also-rans of the overcrowded role-playing genre. Fortunately, Productions Multimage Inc. (I had to check twice to make sure that wasn't a typo as those two words feel like they should be reversed) has come up with a unique slot machine based combat mechanic that makes the game accessible, fast, mobile-friendly (accessible in small chunks), and most of all, fun. When combat ensues, you will press the button to start the reels, and then stop them when you think the time is right. While you can stop all three reels at once, this turns the game into one of pure chance. Instead, watch them spin a few times before stopping them individually in an effort to line things up effectively. The first reel contains your heroes, the second one is filled with weapons, and the third reel contains images of your enemy. You only do damage when either a hero or a weapon (or both) is on the same line as an enemy so lining up your hero and a powerful weapon in the top row won't do anything if the enemy is cooling his heels on the bottom. In order to win the battle, you will need to bring your opponent's hit points to zero before you run out of cherries. Ah yes, the cherries. You begin each battle with a certain amount, and will consume 3 each time you spin. I know what you're thinking. You're thinking that this would be a perfect opportunity for a greedy developer to give you too few cherries to succeed, and then push microtransactions to sell you more. If I had awakened this morning with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn't have been more surprised to find that King Cashing 2 has no IAPs. That's right; it's correctly balanced for maximum challenge and fun right out of the gate so you can just put your coin purses away and get to playing.
As you play, you will acquire ever more powerful weapons, and King Cashing 2 manages to capture that great treasure hunting feel, which is a big part of it's fun. There are also 7 different leaderboards and 87 achievements to keep you compulsory competitors and obsessive completionists busy for a long time.
King Cashing 2 features beautiful retina graphics for supported devices, and full-screen iPhone 5 support. It's a beautiful and colorful game, and it also has a great retro style with charmingly pixelated retro battle graphics. No matter what you're playing it on, you will not be disappointed with the visuals.
Fantastic soundtrack and fun sound effects means you won't want to mute this one while you play.
In-App Purchases (IAPs)
King Cashing 2 contains no IAPs of any kind. Hallelujah.
King Cashing 2 is a fun and original role-playing game. It's unique slot machine battle mechanic means it's playable in small chunks on the go, but beware; if you do this, you will likely find yourself deeply distracted so don't play while crossing the street. Please. The fact that it doesn't try to upsell you with IAPs just makes me love it all the more.

Playing Hints and Tips:
Stop the reels individually and try to line them up to your advantage. You won't succeed as often as you'd like, but when you do, it can make all the difference in the world.
