iPhone Case Review: PureGear DualTek XT Extreme Shock Case for iPhone 5/5s Review
      07/09/14 07:40 PM

PureGear's DualTek XT is an extremely rugged case that also provides some moisture, dust, dirt and splash protection. All that protection reduces its accessibility in key areas, unfortunately.

Size and Fit

Installing the DualTek XT is a two-step process, and one that's going to take a few minutes to complete. This is not a case that you're going to want to swap out throughout your day, but once installed, it fits quite well. For a case that is not waterproof, the DualTek XT is pretty substantial. Comparable in size and weight to most waterproof competitors, don't expect it to rest easily in your shirt pocket.

Features and Quality

Although the DualTek XT is a budget-conscious rugged case, it certainly doesn't cheap, especially once installed. Thanks to its two-layer construction, the DualTek XT is super-rugged, and will likely protect your iPhone from most everyday drops, and may even allow your device to survive some truly hair-raising falls. It also provides your phone from most ambient moisture exposure, as well as dust/sand/dirt. The DualTek XT is not waterproof, however, in spite of looking like it is so don't take it swimming with you. Although all ports, buttons, and switches are covered, most work flawlessly, including Touch ID for iPhone 5s users. The mute switch, however, will be all but inaccessible for anybody with at least medium-sized fingers and no fingernails. In addition, the screen cover substantially reduces screen sensitivity, especially at the edges. This was most noticeable when trying to bring up the Control Center with the required upward swipe.

One last note regarding Touch ID... Supporting Touch ID in a rugged case is an engineering challenge that has yet to be fully cracked by any case manufacturer. Apple covers the home button with actual sapphire because scratches will render this feature unusable. As with all cases that support Touch ID, the DualTek XT uses a plastic cover over the home button that may scratch or scuff over time. If this happens, you will have to resort to a standard coded login. This is a failing of materials, not engineering.

The DualTek XT is available in matte black, glossy white, glossy blue, matte green, glossy pink, and matte yellow so find something that fits your personality.

The DualTek XT Extreme Shock Case does exactly what it claims; it provides substantial shock/drop protection. It also provides significant splash/dust/sand/dirt protection, although it's not fully waterproof. Unfortunately, the mute switch is very difficult to access for all but those with slenderest fingers, and the screen cover reduces screen sensitivity to the point that you may not want to use this as an everyday case. If you can live with these two accessibility concessions, the DualTek XT will protect your phone from most fumbles, and will do so without breaking the bank.

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 3
What's Hot: Excellent drop protection; especially on the corners. Affordable. Touch ID compatible for iPhone 5s. Significant splash protection.
What's Not: Mute switch is all but inaccessible. Screen cover significantly reduces screen sensitivity, especially at the edges. As bulky as most waterproof cases, but not waterproof.
