Soen Transit Wireless Speaker Review
      11/26/14 08:23 PM

Soen Audio is a relatively new name in portable audio market, but their first product Transit Wireless Speaker is a heavy-hitter in producing premium audio experience at a premium price. The Transit has built-in stereo Bluetooth technology and works with smartphones, tablets, laptops and more. For a surprisingly small body, the Transit can produce large sound without degrading audio quality. If you're looking for a top-grade sound on-the-go, the Soen Transit is one of the top choices currently on the market.

Design

The Transit Wireless Speaker has that modern design and precisely machined premium look. The Transit measures 6.6 x 3.8 x 1.3 inches and weighs 17.6 ounces. It's as portable as speakers such as Jawbone's Mini Jambox but a lot smaller and lighter than the Harman Kardon's Omni 20. The premium look starts with the packaging that includes a foam padded high-end accessory style box with a personal touch (a thank-you card signed by Soen folks) and it extends to the speaker that has sculpted shape with soft touch TPU surface and aircraft grade aluminum stand and port plate.

The front facing drivers live behind a wrap-around grille. The metal stand on the back is thick and sturdy. The audio port, charging port and power on/off slider sit firmly on a metal side plate. Volume buttons and an option button live under the rubber cover and they're very easy to operate. The Transit has a high-end fit and finish feel to it in black and chrome.

Audio Quality

As a $200 portable speaker, the Soen Transit offers excellent audio for your money. Though it's not that much bigger than other mini speakers, the Transit produces very loud sound and even at full volume, the audio doesn't blow out in any range. The Soen custom Neodymium drivers produce clear and clean acoustic audio that's rarely heard in such small size. The Neodymium transducers aren't working along though - they have a digital amp behind them and a specially designed Momentum Port that opens up on the side of the speaker for maximize acoustic bass without adding to the size and weight of the speaker. All of that custom design translates into powerful sound and accurate audio output.

We streamed various music genres with different EQ and styles on smartphones, tablets and notebooks, and found the speaker worked well with all devices in producing balanced audio. The volume is loud across the board. This is a speaker that you can use in a large room, your backyard or a party and have sound coverage easily. The audio clarity translates in most audio spectrum, and the presentation is balanced without favoring or distorting. If you're looking for bass heavy speaker, this isn't it. But if you're looking for a balanced and more true to the engineering of the tracks, the Transit performs very well. It plays within its capacity and doesn't distort the dynamic range.

Bluetooth and Battery Life

The Transit has built-in Bluetooth that supports both voice hands-free and stereo profiles. We tested it with several smartphones including the iPhone 6 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, tablets including the iPad Air 2 and the Nexus 9, as well as laptops including the MacBook Air 13 and the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro. The speaker paired with all devices and it streamed music, movie and gaming audio as well as making and taking phone calls effortlessly. The speaker has a built-in mic and it makes for a good conference call system. It can pair with multiple devices and remembers and reconnects seamlessly.

The Soen Transit has a built-in rechargeable Li-Ion battery that can play music for up to 8 hours. It goes to sleep after a period of inactivity to conserve battery. It takes about 2 hours to fully recharge with the included AC charger. The Transit comes with a USB charging cable as well as a 3.5mm audio cable.

Conclusion

If you're looking for a portable speaker that offers clear audio, loud volume and premium design, the Transit is a cut above many portable speakers in this size and weight. It's well machined with good quality material. The whole package offers the premium experience which would make a great holiday gift for audiophiles who need something on the go. It plays well with all devices and performs nicely in all music genres, movies and more.
