Proporta Mohawk TurboCharger 8000 Emergency Charger Review
      12/11/14 09:56 PM

Proporta has been offering the TurboCharger line of portable battery chargers for years and that line has expanded into a collection of batteries that come in different capacities. The TurboCharger batteries range from ultra slim 1000mAh Gizmo to ultra beefy 12000mAh Stripe. We look at the middle tier 8000mAh Mohawk Emergency Charger. The Mohawk comes in two types of packages: the regular Mohawk model and the World Pack model that comes with the International Travel Charger Kit and costs a bit higher than the regular model.

Design

The Mohawk TurboCharger 8000 battery has a clean and modern design with matte black casing and chrome band. The battery is easy to use thanks to the design that puts all ports on one end of the battery. The Mohawk has a power on/off button next to four small LED lights that indicate charging status and power levels. The TurboCharger offers two USB charging ports, a micro USB recharging port and it comes with a USB/micro USB charging cable. The surface of the battery has soft touch coating that feels nice and grippy.

Features

The Mohawk TurboCharger 8000 Emergency Charger has two USB output ports and can charge two devices simultaneously. One of the USB ports outputs 2.1A and the other 1A. This means you can charge a smartphone and a tablet at the same time. You can charge the smartphones in the 2.1A port as well. The battery charger can fill up smartphone batteries reasonably fast but not super fast and it takes hours to charge tablets. Its 8000mAh can fill up many smartphones several times and can also top up most tablets.

We tested the Mohawk TurboCharger 8000 charger with several smartphones and tablets and found it to be an excellent battery for smartphones. The TurboCharger 8000 can fill up an iPhone 6's battery at least 4 times, a Sony Xperia Z3's battery at least 4 times and 50% of a full charge on the iPad Air 2 and 70% of a full charge on the NVIDIA Shield Tablet. The battery charges smartphones reasonably fast but takes a while to charge tablets. For most phones, the TurboCharger usually takes 2-2.5 hours to charge; for tablets, it usually takes 4 hours to dump the power to the tablets. The battery itself takes a few hours to recharge via USB.

Conclusion

The Proporta Mohawk TurboCharger 8000 Emergency Charger is the sweet spot for travelers who need to top up their large devices or keep their smartphone running throughout a long flight. It's small and can fit in any gear bag and it's light weighing 7 ounces. If you travel internationally, the version with the travel kit will give you the prong adapters for every type of power outlet in the world. We like the choices in capacity in the TurboCharger collection and the two charging ports on the TurboCharger 8000.
