Juiced Systems MacBook Gear Review
      09/28/15 08:20 PM

So you bought yourself the incredibly portable 12" MacBook with Retina and are ready to brave the world of a single USB-C port on a full laptop. And then you run into situations where you need more USB ports and maybe you need a card reader. That's a good time to look at Juiced Systems' accessories that give the 12" MacBook an equal number of ports found on much bigger laptops. And even more, Juiced Systems offers a beefy battery and a USB-C cable that allow you to charge the MacBook using a portable power bank. Sweet! We're looking at the Juiced Systems USB-C MacBook 5-in-1 Adapter, the USB-C to USB 3.0 2 Meter Braided Aluminum Charge/Data Cable, the 24,000mAh External Battery Charger and the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 4-in-1 Adapter.

USB-C MacBook 5-in-1 Adapter V1

With the USB-C Macbook 5-in-1 adapter, your MacBook will have as many USB ports as a 15" laptop usually offers, and in addition, you get a full size SD card slot and a micro SD slot. All 3 USB ports on the adapter are 3.0 ports and the SD/micro SD card slots have no trouble with high capacity cards. The stick-shaped adapter sits flush with the MacBook when you plug it in to the USB-C port, and it comes in three colors that match the color options of the MacBook: silver, space gray and gold. The curved body also matches the MacBook's style, in a unibody kind of look, and it's constructed with matte aluminum. The adapter has a small LED light to indicate working conditions. We tested it with a variety of mice, external hard drives, SD cards and micros SD cards. The adapter worked with all flawlessly. The metal body does get very warm if it's plugged in to your MacBook for longer than half of an hour. The MSRP for the USB-C MacBook 5-in-1 Adapter V1 is $59.99.

USB-C to USB 3.0 Charging Data Cable

We all know that USB-C is the next generation USB technology with faster data transfer rate and higher power throughput. However, most of the accessories today on the market, including portable batteries, hard drives, camera and audio product ports largely still have USB ports. To connect your MacBook's USB-C port to the world of external accessories, the USB-C to USB 3.0 Charging Data Cable does the job well. The cable is unusually long at 6.5 feet and it's thick and braided nylon like a Bungee cord. It's sturdier and long lasting than most regular cables and it's tangle free. The two connectors, the USB and USB-C, have aluminum seats that curve elegantly in MacBook's space gray. The MSRP for the USB-C to USB 3.0 Charging Data Cable is $29.99.

External Battery Charger 24,000mAh

Very few portable batteries have the output amperage and capacity for charging laptops, but the Juiced Systems 24,000mAh External Battery Charger offers enough of both to charge your MacBook on the go. The battery measures 6 x 3 x 0.8 inches and adds 1 pound to your 2.03 lbs. laptop. It has two full size USB ports; each outputs 2.1A power and can do it simultaneously. It can fill up about 65% of MacBook's battery. It may not seem much but if you're a road warrior and need that last few hours to complete your email, reports or presentation, the extra power is godsend. If you take your tablets and phones on the road or on a family trip, the 24,000mAh battery with two 2.1A charging ports will seem like a luxury. We tested the battery with several devices including phones, tablets and the MacBook and charged these devices on a trip and here's what the battery dished out on a full charge:

68% of iPhone 6s' battery
92% of Samsung Galaxy Note 5's battery
64% of Galaxy S6's battery
63% of iPhone 6's battery
60% of iPad Air 2's battery
26% of MacBook's battery

With this kind of capacity, the battery can last you a week's recharging of your devices on moderate to heavy use. Though both USB ports outputs 2.1A, the battery doesn't charge everything fast. It charges the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s faster than it does other devices, filling up a full charge in a bout 2.45 hours. It charges the Samsung devices at a lot slower speeds and it charges the iPad Air 2 in 4-5 hours.

The battery has four blue LED lights that indicate the power levels and a long power on/off bar though the battery will start charging when you plug it to a device. It also comes with a small flashlight. The battery uses good quality Samsung battery that should be good for 500 full charges and it takes overnight to recharge the battery. The MSRP of the External Battery Charger 24,000mAh is $99.99.

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 4-in-1 Adapter

Similar to the MacBook 5-in-1 adapter, the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 4-in-1 Adapter gives the Windows tablet some much needed extra ports. The adapter offers 2 USB 3.0 ports, a full size SD card slot and a micro SD card slot. Both the SD and the micro SD slots support SDHC cards. As with the MacBook adapter, the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 4-in-1 Adapter is designed to sit flush with the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and it doesn't block any ports or buttons on the tablet. If you want to use this on other tablets with USB, be aware that it might block some ports or buttons. The two USB ports support power through, which means you can charge your smartphones using your Microsoft Surface Pro 3, and they support external hard drives and mice as well as DVD drives. The MSRP for the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 4-in-1 Adapter is $29.50.

Conclusion

The Juiced Systems accessories allow you to take your small MacBook and tablets on the road yet to be productive. The multi-port adapters, the large battery and the sturdy cable are essential gear when you need to access storage cards, charge your smartphones or tablets, and connect to hard drives, input devices, projectors and more. With the large battery, you can even fill up the power when you're waiting at airports or train stations. And best of all, these Juiced Systems accessories are very reasonably priced.
