Lose data

I have ordered a Dell Axim X30 624Mhz. It has yet to arrive. One concept that I just do not understand is how if the Pocket PC is not charged, that you lose all of your data. Is this true if the data is on the San Disk card?

When my camera battery is low, I don't lose my photos. Same with my laptop, if it loses the charge, I don't lose my data. Why is that not true with pocket pc's and palms?
